Milking Cows and Making Cream

Milking Cows and Making Cream

My dad was a small dairy farmer. He milked on average, approximately 50 cows twice a day, 365 days a year. The only time I remember my dad taking off was when he had back problems and was literally bed fast for a few months. Only then did he allow someone else to milk the cows. Oh we helped him out from time to time but for the most part dad was quite content in the dairy barn, listening to country radio, with a Roy-tan cigar in his mouth, washing off udders and placing milkers on each cow that came through. He knew which ones would be first and which ones were last. Which ones kicked and...

Chickens – a LOVE/HATE relationship.

Chickens – a LOVE/HATE relationship.

After writing my first post, I was brainstorming about what to write about next. I knew I wanted to include a recipe that I had just made and I immediately remembered this picture (above) of me at about 3-4 years old with our chickens. As you can tell the picture quality is poor because we didnt have the digital photography back then as we do now, however as you can see I was quite at home with those chickens. We had a lot of chickens. My dad thought it was necessary to buy about 150 baby chicks every spring. They would arrive at the feed store in town (Paragould Ar about 10 miles from...

Beach Memories

Beach Memories

Lately my Facebook memories have been showing me pictures of vacations I’ve taken to Florida. They are such fun memories filled with so much laughter! I’ll never forget the first time I saw The Gulf – I had just graduated from high school and a group of friends and myself flew down to Florida for a week to visit my cousin, it was the BEST, she took us straight from the airport to the beach. I had never seen so much water and blue sky meet; it created a never ending horizon that was simply amazing! It’s been about two years since I last visited, and I can’t wait until I have the chance to go...

Bad Weather. Beautiful Photos.

Bad Weather. Beautiful Photos.

Stormy weather often makes for a great opportunity to get some great photos. We had a good thunderstorm roll through this morning; thankfully it wasn’t strong enough to cause any damage – it looked more bad ass (excuse my language) than it really was. My better half was on his way to work and was able to snap these two images. I was a little bummed that I was stuck in our our neighborhood at the time – you can’t see anything but tree tops from our front window. Maybe next time I’ll be able to sneak away and get some shots of the next good thunderstorm, but for now I’ll enjoy these beauties...

Made with Love – Grandma’s Apple Pie

Made with Love – Grandma’s Apple Pie

Fall is in the air, and I’m trying my best to hold onto it for as long as I can; meteorologists keep saying that we’re going to have a long Winter which means any day now we can expect Fall to be over and Winter to begin. One of my favorite things to do when the air turns crisp is to bake and to cook. My Grandma Sugar’s apple pie is a must! I was lucky enough to score some free apples from one of the ladies at work and knew immediately that I would be making my grandmother’s pie recipe. This recipe means so much to me; it’s a reminder of so many fond memories while growing up. We would...

Ha ha mother nature keeps us hopping. As Spring brings in the good weather, it brings lots of yard work with it! I don’t know about you, but when I do yard work, I just want my equipment to work...

How to Open and Clean Gas Fireplace Glass - Her Tool Belt

How to Open and Clean Gas Fireplace Glass - Her Tool Belt

Last year I helped my Aunt update her fireplace mantel. Before we started on the mantel, she had some maintenance done on her 30 year old gas fireplace. One of the fixes was to replace the fireplace glass. I couldn’t believe the difference that new glass made, her fireplace looks brand new. That got me looking at how dirty my gas fireplace glass looks. The white haze almost made it so we couldn’t see the logs. Time to see if we can clean that fireplace glass to look new again.   Please Subscribe  This post contains some affiliate links for your convenience. Click here to read my...

This Homemade Guacamole recipe is easy, authentic, fresh, and out-of-this-world good with lime, garlic, onion, cilantro, and jalapeno mixed in with wonderful ripe avocados. This is the best guacamole recipe ever. For real. Whenever there are chips & guac, you might also want a batch of Easy Mexican Restaurant-Style Salsa and a pitcher of Virgin Piña Coladas and Horchata to go with it! You know the old, "if you were stranded on a desert island, what five foods would you bring to eat" hypothetical? This homemade guacamole makes the cut. I used to be all about the ease and...

Horchata Mexican Drink Recipe

Horchata Mexican Drink Recipe

This Horchata Mexican drink recipe is a slightly creamy, non-alcoholic agua fresca flavor made with cinnamon and rice and is perfectly refreshing.  Nothing makes a party like a tasty drink recipe! Some of our other favorites are Brazilian Lemonade, Homemade Hawaiian Punch, and Virgin Piña Coladas. At many legitimate taquerias you might notice large glass jugs or jars holding gallons of colorful agua fresca flavors.  If you have never heard of agua frescas before, it literally translates to "fresh waters" and they are thirst-quenching, light non-alcoholic beverages made mostly...
