Real Canadian Wrestling event held in Erskine

Real Canadian Wrestling event held in Erskine

By Erika Gilbuena For the Stettler Independent Real Canadian Wrestling took place once again at the Erskine Curling Rink on Saturday, April 20, 2024. After six months, Alberta-based professional wrestling promotion, Real Canadian Wrestling (RCW), was back in Erskine for a “Hang ‘Em High” pro wrestling event. The match lasted for seven different rounds with 14 wrestlers. Among the people who watched was John, an avid wrestling fan, who brought along his 9-year-old child. “My dad took me to a lot of wrestling matches when I was a kid, so it’s my turn to bring mine.” The event tickets...

Hergott: How often should a will be reviewed?

The results of a web search of law firm and financial advice pages: “Every few years at least”; “At least once every three to five years”; “Every four years”. Many web pages give lists of life events that should trigger a will review. Brace yourself: You have or adopt a child; your child turns 19; you become a grandparent; changes in your marital status; you think about changing your marital status; changes in a beneficiary’s marital status; an executor or beneficiary dies; a beneficiary develops creditor or substance abuse problems; you acquire assets; you lose assets; you start a...

FOREST INK: Solar systems help reduce hydro costs

FOREST INK: Solar systems help reduce hydro costs

By Jim Hilton Forest Ink I was encouraged about the news last week that the Ulkatcho First Nation was proceeding with the construction of one of the largest off-grid solar projects in Canada. Not only will this project reduce the diesel use by millions of litres it may be the catalyst to introducing other forms of bio energy that could compliment the solar system. I have been experimenting with solar power for 10 plus years starting with six solar panels to supply power at my recreation property. While I still heat with wood and use propane for most of my cooking, I have an...

Mary Lowther column: How will you mark World Naked Gardening Day?

By Mary Lowther While most of us observe the arrival of spring by pulling out our gardening clothes there are some who believe we should be taking them off! In 2005, Mark Storey, editor of Nude and Natural magazine, joined permaculturalist Jacob Gabriel to designate the first Saturday of May as World Naked Gardening Day in order to stimulate interest in agriculture. While this septuagenarian approves in general of any attempt to increase public involvement in food production, she suspects this initiative will appeal mostly to adolescent males. Naked gardening doesn’t appeal to me...

Cowichan Consort Orchestra and Choir wrap up season with concert

The Cowichan Consort Orchestra and Choir are holding their last concert of the season on May 4 in Duncan. This last concert of their 32nd season is all about nature, said organizers. From modern day Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo’s ‘Sunrise Mass’ to opera favourites, and from a Gaelic lullaby to Canadian Loreena McKennitt’s famous ‘Tango to Evora’ from her Juno award winning album The Visit, are some of the works you will also recognize from movie sound tracks and popular operas. On the program is Verdi’s ‘Overture to Forza del Destino’, Mascagni’s ‘Intermezzo’ from his one act...
