My Semester With the Snowflakes
May of 2019, I was accepted to the Eli Whitney student program at Yale University. At 52, I am the oldest freshman in the class of 2023. Before I was accepted, I didn’t really know what to expect. I had seen the infamous YouTube video of students screaming at a faculty member. I had seen the news stories regarding the admissions scandal and that Yale was included in that unfortunate business. I had also heard the students at Yale referred to as “snowflakes” in various social media dumpsters and occasionally I’d seen references to Ivy League students as snowflakes in a few news sources.I...…May of 2019, I was accepted to the Eli Whitney student program at Yale University. Dear news media: Create news for people who have never read a newspaper | by James Tyner | Media Center Lab | Medium
Published inHey, news industry, you’re doing it wrong. As part of a USC Annenberg class looking at how to create new journalism products, I asked some of my fellow USC students what got in the way of their news consumption today. It was a pretty open question, but they had some common answers. Here’s a selection of some themes:“Whenever I try to search for anything that’s not immediately breaking, like if I wanted to learn more about Betsy DeVos, it’s hard to find backlog articles or archived pieces.”“I don’t find it super appealing all the time to sit down and read a huge article online,...…Published inHey, news industry, you’re doing it wrong. As part of a USC Annenberg class looking at how to create new journalism products, I asked some of my fellow USC students what got in the way of their news consumption today. We Also Failed to Build a Billion-Dollar Company | by Jim Greer | Medium
If you haven’t seen it, you should read this unusually thoughtful and honest account from a founder who built a company that was successful by most reasonable metrics, but not by venture capital ones.My experience founding with my sister was much more positive, but I felt some of the same things. We became a vehicle for many indie game creators to make a living, which I’m extremely proud of. I want to be the glass of milk to your Graham Cracker. You can call me “Big Government” in the bedroom because I’ll do all the work while you just lay there.I’m super discreet, like all the oil companies that finance your campaigns. *All statements are my own and do not necessarily reflect the opinons of my employer*Over the past year, I have been in conversations with other social workers and domestic violence advocates where we were able to discuss the nuances of State Question 805 and bring our varying experiences as advocates and as survivors to the table.
