Why do children die?
Twenty-five years ago, I encountered a question that I have thought about literally every day since: Why do children die? Before I tell you what drew me to this mystery, I want to acknowledge that child mortality is not an easy subject to talk about. As a parent, I can’t imagine what it would be like to lose a child. It is shocking even to see the words “children” and “die” used in the same sentence. But I think “why do children die?” is one of the most important questions ever. It is hard to think of a measure of how a society is doing that reveals more than whether it is...… Twenty-five years ago, I encountered a question that I have thought about literally every day since: Why do children die? TerraPower’s Natrium nuclear plant in Wyoming | Bill Gates
Today I’m in the town of Kemmerer, Wyoming, to celebrate the latest step in a project that’s been more than 15 years in the making: designing and building a next-generation nuclear power plant. I’m thrilled to be here after all this time—because I’m convinced that the facility will be a win for the local economy, America’s energy independence, and the fight against climate change. It’s called the Natrium plant, and it was designed by TerraPower, a company I started in 2008. When it opens (potentially in 2030), it will be the most advanced nuclear facility in the world, and it...… Today I’m in the town of Kemmerer, Wyoming, to celebrate the latest step in a project that’s been more than 15 years in the making: designing and building a next-generation nuclear power plant. A new approach to middle school math | Bill Gates
Do you know how to calculate the volume of a prism? What about a pyramid? And what does either have to do with movie theater popcorn? Back in April, I spent the day at Chula Vista Middle School in Southern California learning what these questions have to do with graduating from college. I was there to meet with school and district leaders and join an eighth-grade math class taught by a remarkable teacher named Amilcar Fernandez, who also runs the math department and develops its curriculum. Over the past few years, Mr. Fernandez has been trying to transform how Chula Vista...… Do you know how to calculate the volume of a prism? What about a pyramid? Data could hold the key to stopping Alzheimer's
My family loves to do jigsaw puzzles. It’s one of our favorite activities to do together, especially when we’re on vacation. There is something so satisfying about everyone working as a team to put down piece after piece until finally the whole thing is done. In a lot of ways, the fight against Alzheimer’s disease reminds me of doing a puzzle. Your goal is to see the whole picture, so that you can understand the disease well enough to better diagnose and treat it. But in order to see the complete picture, you need to figure out how all of the pieces fit together. Right now, all...… My family loves to do jigsaw puzzles. The risks of artificial intelligence | Bill Gates
The risks created by artificial intelligence can seem overwhelming. What happens to people who lose their jobs to an intelligent machine? Could AI affect the results of an election? What if a future AI decides it doesn’t need humans anymore and wants to get rid of us? These are all fair questions, and the concerns they raise need to be taken seriously. But there’s a good reason to think that we can deal with them: This is not the first time a major innovation has introduced new threats that had to be controlled. We’ve done it before. Whether it was the introduction of cars or...… The risks created by artificial intelligence can seem overwhelming. What happens to people who lose their jobs to an intelligent machine? Brazil’s public health progress | Bill Gates
I’ve been a big fan of Brazil for a while. I first visited back in 1995 when Microsoft was building out our operations there, including working with one of the national banks to launch home banking. And some of my favorite family trips have been to the Amazon, whose river, basin, and rainforest come up often during conversations on climate change. But it wasn’t until I began working in public health that I started appreciating just how impressive the country’s track record in this area is—and how much the rest of the world could learn from it. In roughly three decades, Brazil...… I’ve been a big fan of Brazil for a while. The message I’m taking to COP28 | Bill Gates
If you follow the news on climate change (and maybe even if you don’t), your news feed has probably been filled with the acronym COP lately. That’s the Conference of Parties, the United Nations’ annual meeting on climate change. This year’s event, COP28, which starts at the end of this week, is an especially important one, and I’ll be traveling to Dubai in a few days to attend. In all of my speeches, panels, and meetings, I’ll share the same messages: Because of a boom in climate-related innovation that started at the Paris COP in 2015, there’s more reason to be optimistic...… If you follow the news on climate change (and maybe even if you don’t), your news feed has probably been filled with the acronym COP lately.
