Maternal Pertussis Vaccination, Infant Immunization, and Risk of Pertussis

Maternal Pertussis Vaccination, Infant Immunization, and Risk of Pertussis

Our study had several strengths and limitations. First, using data linkage systems in Australia, we were able to construct a large, population-based cohort of mother–infant pairs across multiple jurisdictions with comprehensive longitudinal information on maternal and infant health, helping to improve generalizability of findings and reduce selection bias. However, these data are observational and, as with any such study, results may be influenced by confounding. To restrict this influence, we applied several techniques, including adjustment for a...

Saturday Art: Portrait of Ayuba Suleiman Diallo - Shadowproof

Saturday Art: Portrait of Ayuba Suleiman Diallo - Shadowproof

Portrait of Ayuba Suleiman Diallo. Source: wikipediaI was all set to feature a different work of art today, until I saw an article about this beautiful portrait in .The artist is William Hoare (1707-1792). It was recently purchased by the Qatar Museums Authority at auction for £530,000, but the British government has imposed a temporary export bar because the work is seen as having great historic importance. It is on view at the National Portrait Gallery in London. The painting had disappeared and only came to light again in 2010. Diallo is posed formally, wearing  traditional African...

Saturday Art: “The March” by Jacob Lawrence - Shadowproof

Saturday Art: “The March” by Jacob Lawrence - Shadowproof

(image from Wikimedia Commons)Something about the recent events in the world brought these pictures to my mind. Everywhere I see people marching.Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000) was an African-American artist born in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He moved to Harlem at the age of 13, where his mother enrolled him in free art classes. He studied at the Harlem Art Workshop, which was sponsored by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930’s, and he later had a paid position working for the WPA. His main influences were figures in the Harlem Renaissance such as Romaire Bearden, Langston Hughes, and...

Saturday Art: Day and Night by Adolph Alexander Weinman - Shadowproof

Saturday Art: Day and Night by Adolph Alexander Weinman - Shadowproof

This past September, 2010, marked the 100th anniversary of the opening of the famous Pennsylvania Station in New York designed by the architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White. It was torn down in 1963, in an act of cultural vandalism that in my opinion was equal to the destruction of the giant Buddhas in Bamiyan, Afghanistan.Adolph Alexander Weinman(1870-1952) was a neo-classical sculptor who studied with Augustus Saint-Gaudens and worked with Daniel Chester French, the sculptor of the Lincoln Memorial. He was McKim, Mead & White’s sculptor of choice on many of their buildings. But...

Saturday Art: Chagall's America Windows - Shadowproof

Saturday Art: Chagall's America Windows - Shadowproof

I am a huge fan of the Russian-Jewish artist Marc Chagall(1887-1985), and I always go to see any of his exhibits that appear in the New York area. He is also known for creating many beautiful stained glass windows, which are installed in England, Israel, Germany, the U.S and other countries. The America Windows were created in honor of the Bicentennial of the United States, and are exhibited at where you can see a short video about this work of art. They consist of three large sections, each with multiple panes. Bright blue colors predominate, with a few accents of red and yellow. Pablo...

Saturday Art: Why Not Take The "L" by Reginald Marsh - Shadowproof

Saturday Art: Why Not Take The "L" by Reginald Marsh - Shadowproof

Why Not Take The “L”, 1930. Image courtesy of Gunther Stephan(kraftgenie) via FlickrThe 1930’s was a bad decade for the U.S. economically, but it was a very rich era for art. Some of the more well known names that got their start in that era were Jackson Pollack, Ben Shahn, Grant Wood, Edward Hopper and Georgia O’Keefe. There were also scores of other wonderful artists, most of whose names we are not familiar with.  However we may have seen their works without realizing it, because many of them were in the form of murals which are a legacy from the Great Depression in many state and...

Saturday Art: Trompe l'oeuil fresco by Andrea Pozzo, Jesuit Church, Vienna - Shadowproof

Saturday Art: Trompe l'oeuil fresco by Andrea Pozzo, Jesuit Church, Vienna - Shadowproof

image by Alberto Fernandez Fernandez via Wikimedia Commons, reproduced under GNU FDLTrompe-l’œil(also spelled trompe l-oeuil) which is French for ‘deceive the eye’, is an artistic style that uses realistic imagery to create the optical illusion that the depicted objects are three dimensional. Trompe-l’œil has been used in art since the ancient Greeks and Romans, and it was particularly popular during the Italian Renaissance, where it was often used in church interiors. This is a truly amazing fresco that convinces you that the church has a dome in the ceiling. It does not. It’s all an...

Saturday Art: Donald M. Kendall Sculpture Gardens - Shadowproof

Saturday Art: Donald M. Kendall Sculpture Gardens - Shadowproof

Girl With A Dolphin by David WynneToday’s post is not about a particular piece of art or an artist, but a place, the Donald M. Kendall Sculpture Gardens (aka Pepsico Sculpture Gardens) in Purchase, New York. Now that spring is on the way, what could be better than viewing some beautiful works of art in a wonderfully landscaped setting? And best of all, it’s absolutely free and open to the public every day. The gardens are located on the grounds of the world headquarters of Pepsico, just a short drive north of New York City. It’s across the road from the campus of SUNY Purchase, so if you...
