It was recently purchased by the Qatar Museums Authority at auction for £530,000, but the British government has imposed a temporary export bar because the work is seen as having great historic importance. It is on view at the National Portrait Gallery in London. The painting had disappeared and only came to light again in 2010. This past September, 2010, marked the 100th anniversary of the opening of the famous Pennsylvania Station in New York designed by the architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White. It was torn down in 1963, in an act of cultural vandalism that in my opinion was equal to the destruction of the giant Buddhas in Bamiyan, Afghanistan.Adolph Alexander Weinman(1870-1952) was a neo-classical sculptor who studied with Augustus Saint-Gaudens and worked with Daniel Chester French, the sculptor of the Lincoln Memorial. He was McKim, Mead & White’s sculptor of choice on many of their buildings. I am a huge fan of the Russian-Jewish artist Marc Chagall(1887-1985), and I always go to see any of his exhibits that appear in the New York area. He is also known for creating many beautiful stained glass windows, which are installed in England, Israel, Germany, the U.S and other countries.The America Windows were created in honor of the Bicentennial of the United States, and are exhibited at where you can see a short video about this work of art. They consist of three large sections, each with multiple panes. Bright blue colors predominate, with a few accents of red and yellow.
