Red glasses, cake, and indifferent cats. This is 30.
I’m turning 30. I’ve been looking for a good excuse to resurrect this blog for some time now, and this seems as good a reason as any. I understand that turning 30 means I should be deeply upset, spending many hours on contemplative introspection. But look, I have friends coming to visit, and I also understand there will be a lot of cake to get through, so. Priorities. At 15, I could not conceive of myself at 30 – in much the same way that I cannot currently conceive of myself at 60. Attempting to imagine what might change as your years on earth literally double is probably futile anyway....…I’m turning 30. A friend in need
The smooth-skinned and often rain-slicked Arbutus tree is only found on the salty, mist drenched coast of Vancouver Island and close surrounds. Growing nowhere else across Canada, its naked trunk is a specific marker in this unique biome. Steller’s Jay, the mohawked goth relative of the Blue Jay, is the official bird of British Columbia. Their bright blue and grey heads are often seen foraging in my backyard, alongside red-breasted sapsuckers, hummingbirds, and many others I have yet to identify. Sitka, spruce, cedar, and pine are four variations of the towering trees...…The smooth-skinned and often rain-slicked Arbutus tree is only found on the salty, mist drenched coast of Vancouver Island and close surrounds. Ready for Anything Homemade Vegetable Broth
Do you ever feel a little bad about all the vegetable scraps that pile up while you’re preparing a meal? Onion peels (are they called peels?), the tops/stems of peppers, tomatoes, eggplants, broccoli and squashes – it’s a crazy amount of food in the end that you aren’t using in the actual recipe! I did eventually start a vermicycle compost bin, which is a HUGE help, but one thing I love to do with these veggie scraps is use them again for my own personal mealtime gain before feeding them to the compost worms. This vegetable broth recipe is a super simple solution to that problem that...…Do you ever feel a little bad about all the vegetable scraps that pile up while you’re preparing a meal? Andouille Sausage and Vegetable Soup (Whole 30-Friendly)
So…I started the Whole 30. And I have to say, I give a lot of credit to those of you out there who have done this diet. And I wasn’t even a terrible eater to begin with. I already consume loads of veggies and fruits and generally stay away from takeout and junk food. But RICE? CRACKERS? HUMMUS? CHEESE? Those foods are my friends. And now I’m standing on the other side of a fence staring longingly as they all throw a party I’m not invited to. The Whole 30 website is quick to remind us (repeatedly) that it’s “only 30 days”. I’m on Day 7 and so far a total of 30 still seems a bit insane....…So…I started the Whole 30. And I have to say, I give a lot of credit to those of you out there who have done this diet. Did our parents mess up our love lives?
Hi guys, I don’t know if you’re like me but I’ve always found it difficult to express myself when it comes to my emotions and feelings; most especially in romantic relationships. The other day, I was having a group conversation with my friends and it turns out many of us are in this boat. We’re the ones who find it very difficult to say “I love you”, “I miss you” or anything remotely emotional. We’re the ones who aren’t “romantic”. We’re the ones who seem too “strong for love”. We’re the ones whom our partners think can/should be more lovey-dovey. As my friend said, we’re the ones whose...…Hi guys, I don’t know if you’re like me but I’ve always found it difficult to express myself when it comes to my emotions and feelings; most especially in romantic relationships. The Canadian Apology: Sorry, eh?
Sorry to bother you, but I’d like to talk about something today. The Canadian Sorry. Canadians are subject to stereotypes like all other nations, often suffering them gladly. I have yet to see a backpacker appropriating any other country’s flag, which is an odd, but pleasant compliment. However, our reputation for extreme politeness has led to a complete global misunderstanding of a unique linguistic habit: the Canadian Sorry. Image source: Hark, A Vagrant! The Canadian Sorry stands out as a rich point** in Canadian languaculture; it’s a global stereotype; most Canadians willingly...…Sorry to bother you, but I’d like to talk about something today.
