Visualizing active viral infection reveals diverse cell fates in synchronized algal bloom demise

Visualizing active viral infection reveals diverse cell fates in synchronized algal bloom demise

Edited by James L. Van Etten, University of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE, and approved February 1, 2021 (received for review October 15, 2020)Despite years of research in aquatic virology, we remain unable to estimate viral-induced mortality in the ocean and, consequently, to resolve viral impact on nutrient fluxes and microbial dynamics. Here, we assess active infection in algal single cells by subcellular visualization of virus and host transcripts, revealing the coexistence of infected and noninfected subpopulations. We revisit major assumptions of a giant virus’ life cycle: cells can produce...

Biodiversity intervention enhances immune regulation and health-associated commensal microbiota among daycare children

Biodiversity intervention enhances immune regulation and health-associated commensal microbiota among daycare children

As the incidence of immune-mediated diseases has increased rapidly in developed societies, there is an unmet need for novel prophylactic practices to fight against these maladies. This study is the first human intervention trial in which urban environmental biodiversity was manipulated to examine its effects on the commensal microbiome and immunoregulation in children. We analyzed changes in the skin and gut microbiota and blood immune markers of children during a 28-day biodiversity intervention. Children in standard urban and nature-oriented daycare centers were analyzed for comparison....

Seafloor microplastic hotspots controlled by deep-sea circulation

Seafloor microplastic hotspots controlled by deep-sea circulation

What controls the distribution of microplastics on the deep seafloor? Kane et al. show that the answer to that question is more complicated than particles simply settling from where they are found on the sea surface (see the Perspective by Mohrig). Using data that they collected off the coast of Corsica, the authors show that thermohaline-driven currents can control the distribution of microplastics by creating hotspots of accumulation, analogous to their role in causing focused areas of seafloor sediment deposition. Such currents also supply oxygen and nutrients to deep-sea benthos, so...
