Which Crib Mattress Should I Buy?

I have now purchased 4 mattresses for my 2 girls and I agonized over the purchase of each one.  Seriously…. hours upon hours in front of a computer screen comparing mattresses and reviews.  I knew without a doubt I wanted as chemical free as possible.  I am a mom terrified of SIDS.  I had every breathing, video baby monitor I could buy at the time, and through their false alarms and all: I couldn’t relax without them.  When it comes to a mattress, I wanted to make sure they were not subjected to any additional flame retardants or anything off gassing that may possibly contribute to breathing difficulties. 
Mattresses are expensive.  Especially for one that will be used for just a few years, but they also spend A LOT of time on those mattresses in their early years.  My girls are 2 and 4 and the 4 year old still loves her converted toddler bed… so you will easily have this mattress for 4 years. I think by 4.5 we will be switching her out.  
This is my number one pick.  The Emily Mattress ….
This was the 4th mattress we bought:  we bought additional so my kids would have cribs at my mothers house.  This mattress was so soft, had no odor, and my toddler slept like a dream on it.  It is the softest of the 4 mattresses that I’ve purchased, and when it comes to infants sleeping on it: I think a mattress cover and a tight sheet will firm up the top surface enough. 
The Runner up:
This was the Mattress I purchased for Lena… its pretty much the same Mattress that we bought for Vita, only this one has 150 coils instead of 252.  And is a few bucks cheaper (still not cheap – but cheaper).  Do you need the extra 102 coils?  In my opinion… Nope.  
This one should probably be more my runner up, but of course quality speaking:  the 252 is a nicer mattress.  But honestly, after changing my kids beds numerous times: I really can’t tell the difference except Vita’s is a bit heavier.  This is a great mattress…. if you want a Naturepedic..  this is a good one
And Lastly….
 The Naturepedic Classic Organic Lightweight…. what makes it lightweight?  No coils.  it has a foam wavy inner core that provides the support/bounce.  
I know they still call this organic, but Foam is still Foam to me.  We purchased this mattress for my mom’s house and didn’t want to spend a fortune for a few overnights.  But I was still obsessed with it being healthy for the kids so we purchased this mattress.  The issue now?  Well by 18 months my kiddo slept horribly on it.  It has both a Toddler side and infant side… but it didn’t make a difference.   She would wake up numerous times a night crying to get out.  It made no sense since this kid normally sleeps awesome.  So while feeling this firm mattress I eventually had to actually tuck a thin wool blanket around it and put the sheet over it to make is soft for her…. Not Ideal!  But she started sleeping through the night again when we did this.  I hated doing this for safety reasons but she’s a pretty big toddler and SIDS risks are pretty much minimal at this point.  I made sure everything was nice and tight and smooth.  And then she was back to sleeping through the night… and so was I.
I know many parents love this mattress.  It is very very lightweight and easy to change the sheets because of that.  It was kind of a dealbreaker for me thought when my kid is waking up uncomfortable and waking me up multiple times a night.  I didn’t find much difference on the Infant vs Toddler side either.  So: foam: not my favorite.
So yah:  3 Naturepedic mattresses and 1 from My Green Mattress.  Whenever I would do my research, I kept going back to Naturepedic because of their flawless reputation.   I trust their materials and craftsmanship.  We had an issue with one of our mattresses (the stitched seam was not where it was supposed to be) and customer service was just Amazing. The company is top notch. 
 When we found the Emily Mattress : It really impressed me, and when my mom opened the box (since we bought it for her house)  she was immediately impressed with the mattress and actually felt bad we didn’t buy one for each of the girls.  My mom finds things wrong with almost all products and clothing…. so her approval really means a lot.  Really….the woman returns everything.  Hopefully my crib mattress purchases will help someone make this decision a little easier and less painful…. happy shopping.
