So it was July 4th, and I was working a 24 hour shift at the hospital. While I work this shift, my husband is on full duty during that time. Lena is a rambunctious 2 year old and gets into everything. She also went through a considerable length of time where she liked to put pretty much anything into her mouth… crayons, sidewalk chalk, random food bits from the floor, toys, beads, rocks, sand, etc. &nbsp;Over the months many many toy accessories had to be removed from their toy collection and put in a box in the top shelf of our kitchen .. and the box was getting full. &nbsp;We found it best when we found her sucking on yet another non-food item, instead of reaching in for it…. I’d ask her casually to spit it out like it was a game, and that was the best way to ensure we didn’t shove it down her throat by accident. &nbsp;If she didn’t play along, I pretty much panicked and held her horizontal to the ground and opened her mouth so it would fall down and out with gravity as I opened her mouth.
So I was at work and I get a phone call around 8 pm. I had already said good night to the girls so I was like what could he want? While he was getting the girls ready for bed…. he noticed she had been playing with her Olaf Jewelry box… you know the ballerina musical jewelry boxes with the twist-y metal bar on the back? Yah, that one. And he looks at her, and she swallows something…. he asked her to open her mouth: and it was empty.
Then he notices it: the back twisty bar is missing: He asks Vita (now 4) where it is, and she casually says “Lena ate it”. My husband goes into panic/disbelief and starts tearing apart the couch looking for this metal piece. And then calls me..
I answer.and there’s a pause…(bad sign).. then a “Soo…” (ohhh something happened” and I cut him off : “What happened!?!”He tells me the story and that it’s still missing and he believes she may have eaten it but he’s still looking. I tell him, if Vita says she ate it: &nbsp;then she ate it. &nbsp;That kid is on top of things. &nbsp;I texted my friend, a Nurse Practitioner who tells me: just bring her in to get an x ray to be sure… ugh… this sucks!
I’m not sure that I want to subject her to radiation if I don’t need to. Not that its much, but still…its radiation. &nbsp;She’s not going to sit still for it either. &nbsp;I’m worried that T shape thing is stuck in her esophagus somewhere. &nbsp;I mean I get tylenol stuck in my throat: &nbsp;how is that thing not stuck there?
So I ask him to bring them down to the hospital, and I go to the ER and talk to the pediatric MD’s. Once I get down there I explain this story and one of the ER pediatricians is &nbsp;looking at me not impressed with anything I’m saying. &nbsp; Before I even finish the story, she just shrugs her shoulders and raises an eyebrow suggesting don’t bother. &nbsp;
Really? I ask? Its kind of a big chunk of metal and rather ragged. She then says: ” Unless it was a battery or a magnet: they won’t go after it. And if shes acting normal, breathing and eating normally: it’s in her stomach and it will find its way out anywhere from 1-5 days.” &nbsp;Now this is the thing: Magnets: If there was more than 1 little magnet: the magnets could potentially stick together in the intestines and create an obstruction, which means surgery, so that’s why those are bad. &nbsp;The batteries: pretty self explanatory there. &nbsp;Those tiny lithium batteries can be lethal and we should all be very very careful with those since they can be so easily found and swallowed. &nbsp;
So I met my husband in the ER parking lot, and there my kids were in their cute PJ’s. &nbsp;So we skipped the ER and my adorable little children sat up in the office with me and munched on hospital graham crackers and apple juice and played with my other co workers. &nbsp;After a half hour they went home. &nbsp;Lena was completely unfazed by the whole thing: and she was in absolutely no distress. &nbsp;The next morning, I came home from my shift and we awaited our little chunk of metal diaper present. The next evening 23 hours after she swallowed it I changed her diaper….
And there it was in all it’s glory.
After sharing my story many other moms told me of their children eating nickels and dimes, legos, etc.  We were lucky there wasn’t any internal damage:  this thing was kind of sharp and pretty big for a 2 year old I must say.   
Oh Lena, always keeping us on our toes.
