It was quite the weekend for the ACC. First, the conference voted to allow Stanford, Cal and SMU to join. It plunged the ACC into the arms race that is conference realignment, picking up the scraps of a soon to be dissolved Pac 12 and adding a major market team from Dallas in SMU.While it’s fair to say that adding a team from Texas and two from California to the Atlantic Coast Conference makes little sense, causes some logistical problems and hurts the traditional regional nature of college sports, the ACC had to adapt to the times. Well folks, it finally happened.This was quite the news to wake up to this morning. The “Atlantic” Coast Conference is not so Atlantic anymore.Whether you want to admit or not, this was a move the ACC had no choice to make. The Big Ten already held coast-to-coast TV money with its recent additions, as did the SEC. Now, the ACC has markets in the Dallas-Fort Worth area as well as part of California.This would certainly mitigate the travel concerns. Several schools have come up in conversations about growing the ACC: Stanford, Cal, and even SMU. However, there’s a school much closer to the East Coast that makes a lot of sense for both sides: UConn.UConn hasn’t had a consistent home conference for the last decade. The Huskies were a founding member of the Big East starting in 1979, but headed to the American Athletic Conference in 2013 when the old Big East collapsed. Remember back to 2022 if you will for a quick second. Syracuse started 6-0 before Clemson ended that unbeaten run. No harm, no foul right? The Tigers are a perennial powerhouse and there is no shame in losing to them. But, that loss catapulted the Orange toward a disappointing 1-6 finish. Fast forward one season, and SU’s first loss in 2023 also just to happened to be at the hands of Clemson. The question becomes can they avoid another spiral?
