I recently acquired a Pentax MX in very good condition. Like me and many others, when digital cameras became “The Thing” I either sold my film camera or put it in a box and just left it for several years. It looks like the later was the fate of this 1970’s film camera because it’s in such good shape. The fully mechanical shutter is working nicely – except 1 second, which is a bit sticky and slow – but that’s not unusual for old mechanical shutters. The other speeds all seem very good. Now, before you jump to any conclusions, let me explain. I’m a member of Google Local Guides, and every photo uploaded or review completed earns me points (I have enough points to be a Level 8 Local Guide) and until today I was only an Expert Photographer. Today I uploaded my 1000th photo in Google Maps, and I have now earned my Master Photographer badge. I will tell you, it’s quite an award. Actually, I don’t feel much different – and it doesn’t mean anything except that it’s like a carrot in front of a horse – to keep me uploading more and more. In all the years I’ve been traveling to Arizona, I’ve never made it to Monument Valley. We tried to get there a couple years ago, but the Navajo Nation was closed due to Covid-19. Last year, my wife’s brother was forced into retirement due to health issues, and we wanted to do something with him since he’s been home without much to do. So, my idea was to show him a little bit of the American southwest. This month we flew to Albuquerque, rented a car and drove. Our first stop was Winslow, Arizona. I’m getting ready for a trip in the next couple weeks – and the thing I’m looking forward to most is taking some photographs with a film camera. I will be taking a digital camera with me as well, but it’s not as fun as film. I frequently ask myself, “why”, but I honestly can’t pin it down. I think it’s a number of things. Maybe a large part of it for me is nostalgia; I miss the way it was. Technically, that’s not a very good reason. Film has technical merits – it’s just different than digital.
