Seen Studies: I Made a Game!

Seen Studies: I Made a Game!

I’m excited to announce that my game Seen Studies is now available for purchase on The Game Crafter. Seen Studies is a party game that involves exploring TV and Movie tropes, such as “Wacky Sitcom Neighbors” and “Hero Puts Down the Bottle.” The game consists of 150 cards, each of which contains a prompt and a category, either TV or Movie titles, characters, or “characters,” some non-human element of a show or movie, such as fictional in-universe restaurants. Two teams compete in rounds by alternating in providing responses that fit the category until one team can no longer come up with a...

The One Lesson from The Oregon Trail We All Missed

The One Lesson from The Oregon Trail We All Missed

Today’s guest author is Oliver Lyons. Please check out his other contributions in the archives. It’s 1993 and there is goddamned LINE outside of my 7th grade homeroom classroom. Kids willingly woke up early and got their parents to drive them / hitchhiked, I guess? to school so that they can be one of the first in line when the teacher opened the classroom door at 7:30am. And I was going to keep a running diary. Then I was going to do that two additional times. 10 minutes into American Pie (1999), I had decided on watching ONE American Pie movie in a row. And I was...

Justice League “Comfort and Joy”

Justice League “Comfort and Joy”

In the past I’ve written a lot on this website about Christmas. I am a certified Christmas boy, lover of all aspects of the season. When my wife and I put up the tree now, in my brain it’s 1988 and my dad is watching a 4PM NFL game in the tv room while my sisters and I hang ornaments in the living room. A lot of my enduring Xmas loves are things that I experienced during childhood, such as Will Vinton’s Claymation Christmas special or the Sears Wish Book, but there are also period appropriate properties that I first encountered as an adult in the last 10 years, such as Jingle All the Way...
