Antarctic scientists raise fears at senate hearing
A senate committee into funding of the Australian Antarctic Division has heard that cuts to its programs will have “large and ongoing” impacts on the nation’s research in the Southern Ocean. The committee was convened in response to reports the AAD was looking to chop its budget by a sixth, potentially affecting dozens of scientific research programs. The inquiry was called by the Greens and Liberal senators after an email was made public in July from the AAD’s new director telling staff the agency was seeking $25 million in savings. At Tuesday’s hearing in Hobart, representatives from major...…A senate committee into funding of the Australian Antarctic Division has heard that cuts to its programs will have “large and ongoing” impacts on the nation’s research in the Southern Ocean. At Tuesday’s hearing in Hobart, representatives from major...WW…
How do firefighters put out an electric vehicle fire?
Electric vehicle fires have been making the news lately, including a detached electric vehicle (EV) battery catching fire at Sydney Airport and a Tesla lithium big-battery fire at the Bouldercombe energy park in Queensland. But when an EV battery catches fire, how do firefighters respond?Firefighter Emma Sutcliffe from EV Fire Safe says it’s not easy and requires a specialised approach.“We can put out a petrol or diesel car fire pretty quickly because what is burning is plastics and combustibles and sometimes the fuel.“But we’ve been doing that now for 100 years –...…Electric vehicle fires have been making the news lately, including a detached electric vehicle (EV) battery catching fire at Sydney Airport and a Tesla lithium big-battery fire at the Bouldercombe energy park in Queensland. But when an EV battery catches fire, how do firefighters respond?Firefighter Emma Sutcliffe from EV Fire Safe says it’s not easy and requires a specialised approach.“We can put out a petrol or diesel car fire pretty quickly because what is burning is plastics and combustibles and sometimes the fuel.“But we’ve been doing that now for 100 years –...WW…
Citizen scientists generate 62 million records in Australia
Citizen scientists have contributed 62 million records to Australian biodiversity, according to the Atlas of Living Australia (ALA).More than half of the records in the database now come from volunteer citizen scientist observations. The data they’ve generated can be used by researchers to track species abundance and changes, and inform conservation. The ALA, which was established in 2010 and is hosted by the CSIRO on Australian Government funding, is the central hub for Australian biodiversity data.It collates records from nearly a thousand providers to generate open-access information on...…Citizen scientists have contributed 62 million records to Australian biodiversity, according to the Atlas of Living Australia (ALA).More than half of the records in the database now come from volunteer citizen scientist observations. NZ scientists call for urgent policy to address Antarctic threats
New Zealand’s Antarctic scientists convening an “emergency summit” on record low levels of Antarctic sea ice have called for urgent action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In the consensus statement issued after Tuesday’s online conference, a dozen of NZ’s leading biophysical and earth experts raised their concerns about declining sea ice due to warming temperatures in the atmosphere and Southern Ocean. The statement calls for urgent policy action and a “dramatic reduction in greenhouse gas emissions” by New Zealand. It also comes a week out from NZ’s national election.Polls point to a...…New Zealand’s Antarctic scientists convening an “emergency summit” on record low levels of Antarctic sea ice have called for urgent action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
