6 July 1957 was a pivotal day for the history of modern music: it was the day that John Lennon met Paul McCartney for the first time. In the afternoon the Quarrymen skiffle group played at the garden fete of St Peter’s Church, Woolton, Liverpool. The performance took place on a stage in a field behind the church. The Beatles arrived in Hamburg, Germany in the early evening of 17 August 1960, for the first of 48 nights at the Indra Club on the Grosse Freiheit street. The group performed at the venue for 48 nights, ending on 3 October 1960. The venue was owned by Bruno Koschmider, a local club owner who also owned the Kaiserkeller.The group’s contract was to run for two months, from 17 August to 16 October. The Beatles were to receive 30DM (£2.50) per person each day, paid every Thursday. Having seeing their name several times in Mersey Beat magazine, and on posters around Liverpool, Brian Epstein had become curious about The Beatles. Beatles legend has it that Epstein realised there was a buzz around the young group after a customer, Raymond Jones, entered Epstein’s NEMS shop and asked for a copy of the ‘My Bonnie’ single, recently recorded in Hamburg.I was there when Brian Epstein came to the Cavern. He was a beautifully-suited, elegant man and he looked totally incongruous. The session followed the label’s A&R representative Mike Smith’s attendance at a Cavern performance on 13 December 1961.
