Teacher pay raise bill approved by Mississippi Senate
JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - A bill that will give Mississippi teachers more money is one step closer to becoming signed to law.The teacher pay raise bill passed through the Mississippi Senate on Thursday morning.The bill now moves to the House for approval.The proposal would give a $1,000 raise to teachers and teacher assistants. It also would raise starting pay to $37,000. Teachers in their first 3 years in the classroom get a $1,110 pay boost. The Mississippi Department of Health confirmed 264 new cases and 7 new deaths on Thursday morning. So far, 129 people have died from COVID-19 in Mississippi. The amount of people tested in the state totals 37,733 as of April 15. This includes MSDH Public Health Laboratory tests and other providers. There’s an outbreak reported in 65 long-term care facilities in the state.
