A translational riboswitch coordinates nascent transcription–translation coupling
Edited by Sarah A. Woodson, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, and accepted by Editorial Board Member Michael F. Summers March 16, 2021 (received for review November 10, 2020)Transcription–translation coupling is critical for fast and efficient gene expression in many bacteria, yet how coupling between RNA polymerase (RNAP) and ribosome is established and maintained is poorly understood. Combining biochemical and single-molecule fluorescence approaches, we here uncover the roles of nascent mRNA structure and transcription factors in coupling. We find that the inherently paused RNAP...…Edited by Sarah A. Woodson, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, and accepted by Editorial Board Member Michael F. Prothrombotic autoantibodies in serum from patients hospitalized with COVID-19
Patients with COVID-19 are at high risk for thrombotic arterial and venous occlusions. Lung histopathology often reveals fibrin-based occlusions in the small blood vessels of patients who succumb to the disease. Antiphospholipid syndrome is an acquired and potentially life-threatening thrombophilia in which patients develop pathogenic autoantibodies targeting phospholipids and phospholipid-binding proteins (aPL antibodies). Case series have recently detected aPL antibodies in patients with COVID-19. Here, we measured eight types of aPL antibodies in serum samples from 172 patients...…Patients with COVID-19 are at high risk for thrombotic arterial and venous occlusions. HSB-1/HSF-1 pathway modulates histone H4 in mitochondria to control mtDNA transcription and longevity
Heat shock factor–1 (HSF-1) is a master regulator of stress responses across taxa. Overexpression of HSF-1 or genetic ablation of its conserved negative regulator, heat shock factor binding protein 1 (HSB-1), results in robust life-span extension in Caenorhabditis elegans. Here, we found that increased HSF-1 activity elevates histone H4 levels in somatic tissues during development, while knockdown of H4 completely suppresses HSF-1–mediated longevity. Moreover, overexpression of H4 is sufficient to extend life span. Ablation of HSB-1 induces an H4-dependent increase in micrococcal nuclease...…Heat shock factor–1 (HSF-1) is a master regulator of stress responses across taxa. World's most complex microparticle: A synthetic that outdoes nature's intricacy (Update)
April 9, 2020bySynthetic microparticles more intricate than some of the most complicated ones found in nature have been produced by a University of Michigan-led international team. They also investigated how that intricacy arises and devised a way to measure it.The findings pave the way for more stable fluid-and-particle mixes, such as paints, and new ways to twist light—a prerequisite for holographic projectors. The particles are composed of twisted spikes arranged into a ball a few microns, or millionths of a meter, across.Biology is a great creator of complexity on the nano- and...…April 9, 2020bySynthetic microparticles more intricate than some of the most complicated ones found in nature have been produced by a University of Michigan-led international team.
