Protesters want to defund police. Homicides and violence are spiking. In Oakland, ideology and practicality collide.
This article was published more than 2 years agoCommentGift ShareOAKLAND, Calif. — The homicide rate is spiking, a troubled police department is reeling from street demonstrations seeking racial justice and accountability, and the city budget is ravaged by the coronavirus economy. The push to reshape police departments is occurring in cities across the country, but it is perhaps nowhere more evident than here in Oakland, where veteran activists want to sharply reduce the police budget but much of the broader community is struggling with what that could mean.In a place that for the past...…This article was published more than 2 years agoCommentGift ShareOAKLAND, Calif. — The homicide rate is spiking, a troubled police department is reeling from street demonstrations seeking racial justice and accountability, and the city budget is ravaged by the coronavirus economy. The push to reshape police departments is occurring in cities across the country, but it is perhaps nowhere more evident than here in Oakland, where veteran activists want to sharply reduce the police budget but much of the broader community is struggling with what that could mean.In a place that for the past...WW…

With caravans and outdoor rallies that some see as intimidation, Trump supporters step up public promotion
This article was published more than 2 years agoCommentGift ShareThousands of Trump campaign supporters stepped up their public show of celebration, promotion and, in some cases, over the weekend as a nervous nation prepared to head to the polls in two days. The events, car caravans, midsize outdoor rallies and, on Sunday, the apparent blocking of roadways in the Democrat-heavy Mid-Atlantic, have been building in size as Election Day approaches. No injuries — or ostentatious displays of rifles and pistols — were reported, but the demonstrations underscore the unusual nature of this...…This article was published more than 2 years agoCommentGift ShareThousands of Trump campaign supporters stepped up their public show of celebration, promotion and, in some cases, over the weekend as a nervous nation prepared to head to the polls in two days. The events, car caravans, midsize outdoor rallies and, on Sunday, the apparent blocking of roadways in the Democrat-heavy Mid-Atlantic, have been building in size as Election Day approaches. California’s intensified fires are increasing the threat to Highway 1, severed yet again
Photos by Videos by GORDA, Calif. — Life here in this tiny town built on the continent-ending cliffs of the Pacific coast has always had an anxious “when,” not “if,” quality to it. And much of that uncertain fate, season to season and year to year, has been tied to the two-lane road that runs through it.Highway 1 is a California spectacle, a Depression-era monument to the state’s quixotic ambitions and stunning beauty. It runs from the Orange County surf haven of Dana Point in the south into cannabis-cultivating Mendocino County, carrying heavy traffic over the Golden Gate Bridge and under...…Photos by Videos by GORDA, Calif. — Life here in this tiny town built on the continent-ending cliffs of the Pacific coast has always had an anxious “when,” not “if,” quality to it. A mass-casualty event every day
It’s the first day back at work for Scott E. Lynn, the Montour County coroner. He’s been sick with covid-19. He was out for a month and lost 25 pounds. As he arrives at his office in a remote corner of Geisinger Medical Center, he still feels weak. Lynn doesn’t know how he contracted the coronavirus. Deceased people do not spread the virus under normal circumstances. And Lynn mostly handles corpses enclosed in two layers of body bags.“I can only assume it was somewhere in the process of my death investigations,” he says. He wears a mask at work, but he still has to go into homes, motel...…It’s the first day back at work for Scott E. Lynn, the Montour County coroner. He’s been sick with covid-19.
