I had this idea back in the spring to collect the names of the few journalists who died from the coronavirus and have them inscribed on a brick in Poynter’s courtyard. It’s a quiet spot, with the statue of a man reading a newspaper that visitors often pose with. There are tall palm trees, scurrying lizards and strings of lights. The ground is covered with memorial bricks in honor of journalists and their work. After 10 months , I’m certain that the courtyard couldn’t begin to hold all their names., a press freedom nonprofit, has gathered news of their deaths and been a key source in Poynter’s...…I had this idea back in the spring to collect the names of the few journalists who died from the coronavirus and have them inscribed on a brick in Poynter’s courtyard. It’s a quiet spot, with the statue of a man reading a newspaper that visitors often pose with. Joshua McKerrow spent his last day as a photojournalist for The (Annapolis, Maryland) Capital on assignment. At the downtown government building, politicians, lobbyists, news crews and tour groups buzzed around him as he stopped to talk about news of his own — he took a Tribune Publishing buyout. And that, he said, was extremely difficult.“Photojournalism has been my life, and for most of that, it’s been the Capital newspaper. This play is about local news, and it's not exactly a tragedy - Poynter
For 10 days, two playwrights locked themselves into a room to create a play about local journalism. It would have five acts, two actors and tell the story of one local newsroom. “And we came to a beautiful conclusion about how important journalism is and how it matters,” said Janielle Kastner. There was just one thing missing – a big bad moment. Kastner and Brigham Mosley knew that in act four, something would happen. But in those 10 days, they hadn’t quite figured it out. The two finished their first draft in a play they created after embedding at The Dallas Morning News. Lee Enterprises announces pay cuts and furloughs - Poynter
Lee Enterprises joined the list of news organizations hit hard by the coronavirus on Tuesday. Unfortunately, even our best efforts cannot overshadow the fact that our advertising revenue has been dramatically impacted now and for the near future. To ensure our own sustainability, it’s important that we manage the economic impact to our company. The sacrifices we make now will minimize the...…Lee Enterprises joined the list of news organizations hit hard by the coronavirus on Tuesday.
