‘This can’t be happening’: An oral history of 48 surreal, violent, biblical minutes in Washington
This article was published more than 2 years agoCommentGift ShareOn Monday evening, over the course of 48 minutes, Donald Trump put on a show that may have changed America, yet again. It involved an overture to the nation, a physical attack on Americans, and a Bible. It began suddenly, in the Rose Garden, with a statement about “law and order” and “dangerous thugs.” The president promised justice for the family of George Floyd, whose death in the custody of Minneapolis police last week triggered nationwide protests, looting and violence, and a roiling debate about who we are and what...…This article was published more than 2 years agoCommentGift ShareOn Monday evening, over the course of 48 minutes, Donald Trump put on a show that may have changed America, yet again. Did Mike Bloomberg waste $500 million running for president? We’re about to find out.
This article was published more than 3 years agoCommentGift ShareOn the craps table of this campaign, there’s a $500 million chip sitting on “Super Tuesday.” The bettor’s name is mike — small “m,” according to the visual design of his campaign, like he’s your modest neighbor from the split-level down the block instead of a titan of media and finance with estates in Bermuda and Southampton. That’s Bloomberg. Mayor of New York from 2002 to 2013. Democrat, then Republican, then independent, then Democrat. Purveyor of fancy data terminals. Ninth-richest person in the world. A few months ago...…This article was published more than 3 years agoCommentGift ShareOn the craps table of this campaign, there’s a $500 million chip sitting on “Super Tuesday.” The bettor’s name is mike — small “m,” according to the visual design of his campaign, like he’s your modest neighbor from the split-level down the block instead of a titan of media and finance with estates in Bermuda and Southampton. That’s Bloomberg. Rudy Giuliani’s post-election meltdown starts to become literal
This article was published more than 2 years agoCommentGift ShareIt’s very simple, according to Rudolph W. Giuliani and the rest of President Trump’s legal posse, but also very vast. China is in on it. Cuba is in on it. Antifa and George Soros are in on it. At least two presidents of Venezuela, one dead and one living, are in on it. Big Tech is in on it; a Web server from Germany is involved. (There’s always a server involved.) Multiple major U.S. cities are in on it, as are decent American citizens who volunteer at polling precincts. Argentina is in on it, too, sort of. Chicago Mayor...…This article was published more than 2 years agoCommentGift ShareIt’s very simple, according to Rudolph W. Giuliani and the rest of President Trump’s legal posse, but also very vast. Goodbye to Gate 35X, cursed portal to the rest of America
Let’s get right to it: It was a bus station. A bus station in an airport. It was two places you’d rather not be, melded into one place. There was no flourish to its badness. Gate 35X at Reagan National Airport did not have the utilitarian exotica of the Dulles people-movers, trundling across a tarmac Tatooine. It did not have the high-low smack of Union Station, where travelers are welcomed by the Roman arches of Constantine but digested through a boarding area that feels like the waiting room of an ER. Gate 35X wasn’t a vortex like the Springfield Interchange, or a labyrinth like the Metro...…Let’s get right to it: It was a bus station. A bus station in an airport. The president is sick but his followers feel great
This article was published more than 2 years agoCommentGift ShareEarly Sunday afternoon. Thirty days until the election. Donald Trump’s supporters were holding history’s loudest vigil outside Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, where the president’s oxygen levels were being monitored as he for the camera. Fifty supporters danced on the northbound curb of Rockville Pike, elbows and knees within inches of side-view mirrors moving at 40 mph. The blare of horns competed with AC/DC and Lee Greenwood.Men with bullhorns walked around, calling for “eight more years,”...…This article was published more than 2 years agoCommentGift ShareEarly Sunday afternoon.
