Our staff, on-site business tenants and local law enforcement have been contacted and asked to share any information they may have. The incident is under investigation by the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department," the raceway said in statement to SFGATE. "Sonoma Raceway takes this incident very seriously and is dedicated to operating a facility that is welcoming to everyone."An email sent to staff and tenants by raceway President Steve Page said officials are reviewing surveillance footage. Anyone with more information or "any possible alternative explanation" is asked to contact Page."We take this very seriously," Page wrote. "We know you share our goal of operating a facility that is open and welcoming to everyone and we appreciate your support in preventing hostile and offensive activities that violate that spirit."On Tuesday the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department released a few more details. According to the department, a track employee recalled seeing the rope in a tree about seven years ago "after crashing a model airplane," but the rope was not tied into a noose at that time. The FBI has also been brought in to help with the investigation.Sonoma Raceway, a road course at Sears Point, is the Bay Area's biggest auto racing venue. It hosts a NASCAR Cup Series race, along with NHRA races and amateur events. It's currently closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.The news comes as NASCAR is rocked by the discovery of a noose in the garage stall of Bubba Wallace, the sport's only Black full-time driver. The noose was found Sunday by a crew member at the Talladega Superspeedway and the FBI has been brought in to conduct an investigation. Because of the pandemic, a limited number of people were allowed in the garages: NASCAR says it has a list of approved personnel that has been given to authorities."This is a very, very serious act and we take it as such," NASCAR President Steve Phelps said. "We will rid this type of behavior from our sport."Wallace was instrumental in pushing NASCAR to ban Confederate flags at its venues.Katie Dowd is the SFGATE managing editor.
