I grew up in an area where education wasn't regarded as a high priority. Manual labor jobs and meat works were the norm. Not to say that there is anything wrong with that message, it was just my truth growing up. 
  A similar message was also portrayed in my school. I was often told by my teachers that if I ever dropped out of school I would be worthless to society. Education was the key right and how was I supposed to get one if I dropped out of school? 
  It just made sense. 
  I got to 7th form and graduated as the top Maori male academic in my year! 
  Now reading that statement you would assume I would've been really proud when I received this award. Don't get me wrong, any time I&nbsp;can represent my culture in a positive light I will gladly take it. In saying that, the reason I won the award was because I was the ONLY Maori male to make it to 7th form that year. I essentially won by default. 
  Not exactly the best way to win anything I will admit. 
  After leaving school I found that although I had an award for top Maori academic I essentially didn't know shit about the world and how it operated. I literally had ZERO qualifications and the only jobs that would take me on after school were door to door sales jobs. 
  And it was there, on the sometimes cold, wet and rainy nights on the streets doing door to door sales where I truly became educated. I learnt so much about how people interacted with one another, how words with meaning carried so much weight behind them.  
  Persuasion is a powerful tool and it needs people who know how to wield it. 
  This time of my life really opened my eyes to what education really is. Although I am no longer in door to door sales anymore the time I spent doing this is one of the most valuable times of my life. Lessons that could never be taught within the four walls of a classroom. 
  Just because you aren't in the four walls of a classroom does not mean that you aren't learning anything. Education doesn't stop when you leave the classroom.

  But here I am. 
  11.30 pm on a Tuesday night educating myself while my wife lay on the couch next to me watching The Resident. Supporting me while I take time to hone my craft. Educating myself on a passion that I am going all in on. 
  As I am writing this article I found myself thinking 'I wish someone had told me this is what education could be when I was in school.' 
  Well, why can't I be that person to tell you. 
  Now listen up. 
  Regardless of where you've been in life. What your circumstances are. If you've got the passion and drive you can do it.  
  Don't bullshit yourself. 
  It's not going to be easy but nothing good in life ever is. 
  If you want it enough you can do it. There's enough hours in the day to make your dreams come true. Anyone who says otherwise was taught this in the four walls of a classroom. 
  Now don't let those voices in the back of your head tell you otherwise. 
  Get out there and make a change!
