PELLA, Iowa (KCCI) - Every spring, people from across the Hawkeye State travel to Pella for the Tulip Festival. However, this year hundreds of Pella High School Band alumni are returning to their hometown to honor their band director, KCCI’s Kayla James reported.Guy Blair passed away in March after suffering complications from cancer. Blair was the band director at Pella High School from 1973 to 2005. During that time he touched the lives of his countless students.KCCI spoke with his past students on Friday. Brenna Hyatt and Lindsy Brandt say he was more than their high school band director.“He was just dad,” Hyatt, Blair’s daughter and Brandt’s sister recalled. “He played piano with us at home, rode bikes with us at home, and played catch with us at home.”“He just loved being able to showcase the band,” Brandt remembered. “Tulip Time was just, like, let’s get to show the community what these kids have accomplished.”As a Pella resident, Tulip Time, was important to Blair. This year, just over a month after his death, the Marching Dutch Band is using the festival as an opportunity to honor their beloved band director.At 2:45 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, the Marching Dutch band members will play in the parade. His past students will march behind them holding signs representing each year Blair taught band. Word of the memorial spread to the past students via a Facebook Post on the Marching Dutch’s page.“The response was immediate,” Dameon Place, the co-director of bands with Pella High School explained. “We topped 150 in about four days.” Place was Blair’s last student teacher in 2005 and has been the co-director of bands for the last decade.“We’re really excited to see those people come together and visually represent the impact his career had on so many people in this community,” Place stated.Copyright 2024 KCCI.
