Skip to contentHomeLocal SportsDuo combined for six goals, three assists in KPI’s last two gamesSarah SimpsonThe Kerry Park Islanders played three games in three days this past weekend and, according to their coach Henry Acres, his players seemed to get stronger with each game.“It is a testament to the work the guys have done in building their fitness level,” Acres said.Following a 3-1 loss to the Victoria Cougars Thursday, Sept. 28, the Islanders visited the Kraken’s den in Lake Cowichan on Friday, Sept. 29 and came away with a 6-3 victory.Parker Klippenstein scored his fourth of the year 14 minutes into the first period to set them ahead by one but the Kraken’s Parker Newman and Declan Stewart scored 18 seconds apart to give Lake Cowichan a 2-1 lead headed into the second period.No goals were scored in the second period but the third saw six markers including two from Finlay Klippenstein, and first-of-the-year-singles from each of Eric Stinson, Nathan Da Silva, and Noah Hovde for the Isles, and Calvin Collins for the Kraken.On Saturday night the Isles faced off against the Comox Valley Glacier Kings in a special game at Kerry Park Arena.The evening began with a moving on-ice ceremony acknowledging the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation that included the Tzinqwa Dancers featuring Jacob Clark.Fans wore their orange shirts and the spirit of the community was palpable, as was evident when those in the arena picked up the slack when the sound system malfunctioned prior to the game.After what “felt like an eternity,” according to one fan, “the players and fans were starting to get restless. All of a sudden the Kerry Park players started singing O’ Canada without the music, soon everyone in the arena joined in. It was great!”Sporting their special jerseys designed by Stuart Pagaduan, the Islanders battled hard, but eventually took a 6-4 loss.“Although the scoreboard did not end in our favour, we feel we won in our hearts last night,” said the team the following day. “Thank you to everyone who joined us for the game. We are proud to be part of this community.”Similar to their game against the Kraken the night before, Parker Klippenstein scored once and in the first for the Islanders while his brother Finlay Klippenstein scored twice. Stinson also picked up a goal in the losing effort.“Victoria is a strong team, Lake Cowichan is as well and Comox is a top team in the North division so the caliber of competition was high,” Acres said, noting there were many high points over the weekend including sustained offensive zone pressure and shot volume leading to the scoring of 10 goals over the last two games, as well as the play of the Klippenstein brothers rebounding back on Friday/Saturday to play at a really high level.“We still give up too many goals against and that is compounded by the timing and frequency of the goals against, they come in bunches, give up a goal and again then the very next shift which is a momentum killer and costs so much to come back from,” Acres said.“I am proud of the fight in the group, the progress they are making and will continue to make,” Acres added. “Taking a victory in only one of these three games is a bitter pill to swallow.
