The Noah Project was founded in 1980 when it was discovered that this part of West Texas had a nasty little secret called domestic violence and nobody was addressing it.Get our free mobile appThe Noah Project started when a research team distributed surveys to area hospitals, law enforcement agencies, attorneys, and some social service organizations. That survey revealed&nbsp;a nasty little truth about West Texas.The ugly fact was that there were over&nbsp;a&nbsp;thousand families that reported domestic violence in their homes within a six-month period. I recall getting involved by&nbsp;airing public service announcements and interviewing the wives of two Abilene Police Officers who were leading the way&nbsp;to help open the doors&nbsp;to the Noah project.Shortly after the discovery was made a single-family dwelling was converted into a makeshift protective shelter for the abused, that was in 1980. By 1985 the shelter moved to another&nbsp;converted single-family home on Grape Street in Abilene.Then in 1987, the Noah Project-North satellite office opened in Haskell, Texas. By this time the Noah Project was serving 10 counties in West Texas. Those counties included Callahan, Eastland, Haskell, Knox, Jones, Shackelford, Stonewall, Stephens, Taylor, and Throckmorton counties.Please help us support and bring attention to domestic violence that is still taking place right here in the big country.
