A California teacher has resigned after being heard on a hot mic making racist, insulting remarks about a Black student, his mother and the Black community at large for more than a half-hour.Kimberly Newman taught science at Desert Willow Fine Arts, Science and Technology Magnet Academy in the Southern California city of Palmdale.On Jan. 20 — Martin Luther King, Jr. Day — Newman hopped on a Zoom call with the student and Katura Stokes, the student’s mother, to discuss issues with the school’s online learning platform. The district remains largely in distance learning, but four elementary schools reopened earlier this month. Middle schools are expected to reopen April 12.After the call, in which the student’s issues were seemingly resolved — he had caught up on his assignments, per a legal complaint filed by Stokes — the teacher inadvertently stayed on the call.With her mic still on and the Zoom chat still open, she went on a tirade to her husband, all of which was recorded by Stokes. She said she recorded the call in the complaint because of how unbelievable the comments were.The district’s superintendent, Raul Maldonado, declined to comment further to SFGATE.“She’s answered her phone for the first time the entire year,” the teacher said, . “I mean these parents, that’s what kind of piece of s—t they are.”“He’s Black. They’re a Black family,” she added. In the call, she also deploys racist slurs against Stokes and her son.“I’m seeing what you’re not going through,” a voice on the call says, identified by the Register as Newman’s husband.“Your son has learned to lie to everybody and make excuses ... to be a child,” Newman goes on to say. “Since you’ve taught him to make excuses that nothing is his fault. This is what Black people do.”Stokes called the principal at Desert Willow to report the comments, according to the Register. Soon after, Newman received a call and hung up on Zoom.Newman was put on administrative leave before resigning in light of the rant. Per the , she refused to participate in an investigation.Attorneys representing Stokes did not immediately respond to a request for comment from SFGATE.The Associated Press contributed to this report.
