CRITIC REVIEWS

Well Sourced

A prospective reader may find the article interesting, but only insofar as they have an interest in Tesla automobiles. The outlet is credible and the link to The Moscow Times coverage via Reuters is helpful. Some readers may find the original reporting slightly more informative. Generally, a worthwhile read, if for no other reason than its brevity.

Author Devin Coldewey does well at the end of the article to make clear to readers that this is not a common occurrence and that stories about Tesla combustion are often sensationalized. I liked how transparent he was about what information he's been able to confirm to-date, and that he doesn't want to speculate further.

Investigation for this is ongoing, so the author includes the available information, and some mild speculation that is clearly informed as being such.

Lack of Reliable Sources
August 15, 2019
Why couldn't the author provide a statistic for this? 'Tesla cars are in crashes about as often as other vehicles, but fires are rare.' This claim should be supported by data.

The author is clear about the pieces of information that are missing. He presents what he knows and pops up with points that need more investigation. It's credible, but now I'll be waiting for more information.

Balanced and informative article that explores the crash of a Tesla in Russia and the subsequent ignition and explosion of the car. The author does a good job at explaining the recent discussion about Teslas potentially exploding more often than other cars but is quick to point out that the facts show a different story and the sensationalisation around accidents of battery based cars is real.

Finally an author who can speculate but make obvious that it is speculation and should need additional info. That's the summation of this article too. However, the author investigates to gather the necessary information for a balanced look at an issue that could easily be clickbaity.

Credible

“Balanced” in that what we see seems to have happened, and the text doesn't go off on unwarranted fear-mongering. But sensationalist. We get a few cheap thrills at splosions, Tesla takes a hit to buyers' worries about safety that may or not be well-founded…the article specifically omits any context for whether this story would've made it online for any other brand of vehicle, electric or gas.

Great Context

The written story, standing alone, provides credible balance to the event. The video evidence verifies. The only alternative would be an amazingly well orchestrated conspiracy including insurance scam by owner(possibly), Russian government involvement to coordinate traffic and undermine Tesla(😉), and a film maker without an ego to film without audio overlay(not a chance). Articles about Tesla attract readers like a free meal for poker players.

As the majority of articles from TechCrunch, they stick to the point of reporting the news without giving in too much of their personal bias/opinion. This article, as it currently stands, lacks additional info and research, but it is not trying to be a Tesla-bashing piece as the title might have led to believe. Will like to read further if Devin updates the article
