MADISON (WKOW) - Representatives of the Wisconsin Hospital Association and its member facilities are encouraged by a downward drop in COVID-19 patient hospitalizations after a case surge in the fall and early winter.Officials say there are 385 patients being treated in hospitals statewide - the lowest number since September.Public Health Madison &amp; Dane County officials say 41 patients are being treated in hospitals in the county, down from 88 on Jan. 11. They say during the past two weeks there's been a twenty-one percent decrease in hospitalizations.Dr. Matt Anderson of UW Health prefers a comparison of COVID-19 patients at UW Hospital to last fall. "We're about seventy-five percent lower as far as the number of in-patients with COVID-19.""We have seen a remarkable reversal in the right direction of the trend of COVID-related hospitalizations statewide," says WHA President Eric Borgerding.The drop off in hospitalizations coincides with a case decline overall.Officials say the seven day average of people who have tested positive for the virus is 731. That's the lowest number since September. In January, the average was more than 2,000.Anderson says the continuing progress in COVID-19 vaccinations played a role in the declining case average and hospital patient numbers. But Anderson says there are other factors."Even pre-vaccine, we started to see declines early on and that was around the Thanksgiving time frame," Anderson says. "The presumption is that people changed their behaviors, that people followed the distancing and mask guidelines," he says. "That's really gotten us to a large degree to this point."The byproducts of the decline in COVID-19 hospitalizations begin with easing the pressure on front line workers who've been assigned coronavirus patient care. "You think about the stress it places on our staff and just the sheer amount of work to be done," Anderson says.Borgerding says needed hospital attention to COVID-19 patient surges especially in the fall crowded out other health care services. "Things like colonoscopies, mammography, hip replacements, knee replacements," he says.Borgerding says stalled, hospital procedures are resuming. "And no one should be delaying any kind of care."Anderson is cautiously optimistic vaccine, behavior, and experience with the disease will lead the coronavirus curve to further flatten. "Our expectation and our hope is that we're going to continue to see that."Some infectious disease specialists warn of a potential, fourth wave of COVID-19 cases with spring break travel and Easter Holiday gatherings on the horizon. Borgerding says ramp ups in potential patient capacity and staffing contingencies in May will serve as a template for hospitals in the event of another surge.
