Independent bookshops have joined forces to take on the might of Amazon in the run up to Christmas.Scores of independent retailers have signed up to sell books via the platform , which is billed as the “socially conscious alternative” to ’ e-commerce giant.&nbsp;The site, which launched in the US this year, hopes to loosen Amazon’s grip on the book industry and offer local bricks-and-mortar shops a better chance to compete.Bookshops are invited to create online store profiles for the site and, the start-up promises, will earn 30 per cent of the cover price&nbsp;– the entire profit margin – on any sales that come via their links, book lists or shop page.&nbsp;The US operation has been hailed as a success after signing up more than 900 stores since January, generating more than $7.5m (£5.8m) for shops affiliated with it, far exceeding expectations.&nbsp;Now, the company is making inroads in the UK, where around 100 local bookshops are believed to have signed up ahead of its launch next month, according to industry publication The Bookseller.&nbsp;Discussing Bookshop’s UK expansion earlier this year, Mr Hunter said: “Bookshops are essential to a healthy culture, and online sales are vital to safeguarding their future. Covid-19 has added further urgency to the need for bookshops to compete for online sales.”&nbsp;Nicole Vanderbilt, managing director at Bookshop UK, said: “At a time when Amazon has enjoyed even greater advantage over high street competitors as a result of the pandemic, Bookshop offers a socially conscious alternative to consumers wishing to shop online, while supporting bookshops in competing in an ecommerce environment.&nbsp;She added: “We’re delighted to be launching in the UK.”
