Native Sons BBQ, the popular San Francisco barbecue pop-up, has lost its chef and co-founder: Marvin Lau died on July 5 after a long battle with cancer. He was 42 years old."Marvin lived a short but full life, filled with many adventures, friends, and amazing food," read the obituary on . And if you said no, expect to be made something delicious and from the heart."on Aug 3, 2020 at 3:14pm PDTLau was born and raised in San Francisco, and had many occupations and hobbies throughout his life, from working as a bicycle mechanic to opening his own barbecue business. Being diagnosed with a rare head and neck cancer in 2010 was actually the impetus for Lau to quit his job as a software tester and start Native Sons in 2014 with his friend Eldo Chan.READ ALSO:Native Sons was highly praised for its Texas-style smoked brisket: the even called it the next best thing to Franklin Barbecue in Austin. The last Native Sons pop-up took place in April 2019, after which Lau's health deteriorated to the point where he could not longer continue the pop-ups. Chan told that it’s too early to say if the beloved pop-up will ever return."It is a true testament to his character that he has made such an impact on so many people from different walks of life," the obituary continued.
