Tucked away in the basement of the Cornell Hotel de France, guests of the Restaurant Jeanne D'Arc dined beneath stained-glass chandeliers and blue-and-white paper flags as the unflinching gaze of a Joan in Arc statue followed their plates of braised rabbit and duck confit across the medieval-themed room.After nearly half a century in business, the Union Square eatery known for its affordable prix fixe menu and quirkily baroque decor — possibly one of the last authentic French restaurants in San Francisco, by their own account — has permanently closed its doors. Longtime proprietor Claude Lambert confirmed the closure on Bastille Day, the first time in 55 years that the restaurant did not celebrate the French holiday.“Quelle tristesse!” he in a Facebook post. How sad.Jeanne d'Arc had been shuttered since March 11, just prior to the shelter-in-place order and subsequent economic shutdown that led to the closure of countless San Francisco institutions like it.ALSO:&nbsp;Lambert said that he would miss the musicians, singers and artists whose tableside performances delighted diners at the restaurant over the years, as well as the special events and transportational atmosphere of the building on Bush Street where he had built his career. He once under the stairs of the dilapidated hotel he would eventually renovate and come to own with his wife, Micheline.“It has been the achievement of our life,” wrote Lambert. “Above all, we shall miss our dear customers who became true friends of ours... we thank them for their faithfulness which gave us the good feeling of being useful in the San Francisco and the French communities.
