Detroit Free Press Two children were seen walking along the edges of a Lake Michigan pier when large waves began crashing in.The two began running for their lives as the waves almost swept&nbsp;them as they&nbsp;crashed into the&nbsp;pier in Michigan City, Indiana — a popular vacation spot on the border with Michigan.&nbsp;They gripped the catwalk poles tight and ran when possible&nbsp;while attempting to make it back to shore. And luckily, they did.&nbsp;A dramatic video captured Sunday by photographer Brandon Clair of Timeless Aerial Photography shows&nbsp;high wave activity at a Michigan City, located in Washington Park, according to a news release.&nbsp;Clair&nbsp;kept&nbsp;track of the two kids as a rescue team was helping other people nearby.&nbsp;More:"I kept the camera on them to make sure they made it back OK, because at the same time, the Coast Guard&nbsp;was rescuing two other people that got pulled&nbsp;out by a riptide," said Clair in an email.Dave Benjamin, executive director of the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project, said&nbsp;that he saw the raw footage of the video. He said&nbsp;the fire and police department arrived on the scene and two people were seen strapped to stretchers while being treated.&nbsp;But not everyone makes it back to shore due to the high wave activity, according to the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project. Just this year, the entity reported 33 drownings, along with five others with unknown outcomes. Since 2010, there have been 871 Great Lakes drownings,&nbsp; according to the group.&nbsp;Sunday is an example of how high wave activity can be dangerous. The same day, swimmers were rescued by bystanders in Washington Park in Michigan City, Indiana, according to the&nbsp;release.The Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project said a&nbsp;man was rescued with a life ring after being washed off a South Haven pier. In the same area, a 20-year-old man was submerged in the waves and the search for his body is still ongoing.In St. Joseph, two sisters were sent to the hospital after being rescued by bystanders. One sister has been released and the other is in critical condition, the group said.And in Bridgman's Weko Beach, CPR was performed on a young boy that bystanders pulled from Lake Michigan. The Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project says there is no update on the boy's condition.&nbsp;“When there is high wave activity, cities with piers should restrict access,” said Benjamin in a news release. “Going out on these piers is a high-risk situation with very little reward.”“If the cities are providing access to the beach, it’s also providing access to these piers. Save a life and restrict beachgoers from accessing the piers. Every year people are washed off and die a completely preventable death.”
