The group rallied in downtown Jackson Saturday morning with confederate flags and the old Mississippi flag that bears the confederate emblem fighting for their voices to be heard just as others have fought for their voices to be heard about a flag change. “Not only was it wrong for our voice to be taken from us, but it was wrong to spend that kind of money,” Holly Scanlan, one of the rally organizers, said. “They could have taken that money and given it to our veterans or put it in our school systems.”The group said they are trying to bring attention to a campaign for a state flag ballot referendum started by Senator Chris McDaniel. "Senator McDaniel needs 5,000 signatures to get the original flag on the ballot," Scanlan said. These people said they want the old state flag to be on the ballot for the November 3 election to vote on alongside a new design. In the meantime, new designs are being created to be sent to the nine-member committee who will ultimately choose the flag that will be voted on. Many people have already submitted their designs for a new state flag, one being Reshonda Perryman.Perryman said her design features different colored stripes that represent different cultures all coming together that then forms the letter "M" for Mississippi. "A heavier blue represents stability and the dignity that Mississippi is capable of and that we do have and the red is brighter to represent a brighter future," said Perryman. A nine-member commission plans to submit a new design to the legislature in September before being put on the November ballot.
