&nbsp;A rally to protest Gov. Laura Kelly’s order requiring the wearing of face masks, announced to take place at the state Capitol at noon Thursday, failed to materialize.The rally was planned to protest Kelly’s July 3 executive order mandating the use of masks in public spaces. The event was announced on the Facebook page Liberty Unmasked. The page stated the event would be hosted by the Kansas City Area Preparedness Network."We the people must deside [sic] are we on the side of liberty or will we alow [sic] tyranny to prevail! show up send a message" was the only text on the invitation. Shortly after noon Thursday, the page was taken down.Five individuals gathered at the base of the steps on the south side of the Capitol, discussing why the event failed to attract more people. A few more people stood at a distance, waiting to see if the rally would materialize. None of them said they were familiar with the Kansas City Area Preparedness Network. Attempts to contact the organization failed.The group spoke informally while waiting for the event to take place, complaining about the inconsistency of application of the mask requirement. They called the shutdown for COVID-19 an unnecessary overreaction. They said they had attended other, well-attended rallies at the Capitol to protest the shutdown of schools, churches and businesses."Sometimes these things happen in the world of political activism," said Neil Melton, of Prairie Village, as he left the failed rally. "There is a lot of anti-mask sentiment out there. For whatever reason this one just wasn’t as well organized as some of the other events."Melton said he recently attended a meeting of the Johnson County Board of County Commission, which he said drew a large crowd to address the mask mandate. He said those at the board meeting were probably "3 to 1 against the masks versus those in support of the masks."Kelly’s Executive Order No. 20-52 requires that "most Kansans must wear a mask while in public spaces, and in places where individuals are unable to maintain social distancing of six feet."In a large number of counties across Kansas, local officials have overruled Kelly’s mandate, as is permitted by law. Shawnee County adopted its own mask order, as have some cities within counties that rejected the mandate."I’m just a citizen, quasi-activist, just trying to do my part and I was willing to come out today," Melton said. "It’s ridiculous, in my mind, what’s been told to us. They said the virus was going to spread, and we did things initially to (flatten) the curve, to keep hospitals from being overwhelmed."Now the goalposts have just moved so many different times. The masks aren’t going to do anything, and it’s a very egregious infringement on peoples’ civil liberties."This isn’t the Spanish flu of 1918 that killed 50 million people around the globe. We’re nowhere near that, and it just doesn’t rise to the level of this kind of response and this draconian mandate."The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it is estimated that about 500 million people or one-third of the world’s population became infected with the Spanish flu during the 1918 pandemic, and the number of deaths was estimated to be at least 50 million worldwide.The World Health Organization reported more than 11,874,000 infections and 545,000 deaths due to COVID-19 as of July 8.
