His kin tell the Herald the closure is a relief, especially on the 70th anniversary of the Korean War Thursday.“I always felt that some day we would find out what happened to him,” said nephew Stephen Redgate, of Montana, who is also Thomas Redgate’s godson. “Tommy’s surviving family is only a hint of what could have been.”Another nephew, Andrew Redgate, of Uxbridge, said he’s “grateful to bring closure to this sadness, but others from other wars and conflicts are still in this same limbo.”Andrew Redgate also wonders what ever happened to his uncle’s fiancee.“He was engaged and I think about her often and how she coped,” he said. “How her life was.”Thomas J. Redgate was 24 years old when he was reported missing in action on Dec. 11, 1950. His field artillery unit was attacked by enemy forces near the Chosin Reservoir. His remains could not be recovered after the battle, the Army said.That all changed in 2018 when President Trump met with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un in Singapore. Soldiers reported missing in action were found after that meeting “set the wheels in motion” to honor the dead, the family said.“Without President Trump, this never would have happened,” said Andrew Redgate. “We are eternally grateful to him.”He said the family is not big on politics, but Trump deserves credit for thinking of veterans lost in the war.The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) has kept the family in the loop, from announcing their uncle’s remains had been found to working through the logistics of burial. Family members have also kept in touch over Zoom to agree on next steps.More than 40,000 American soldiers were killed during the Korean War and about 7,500 Americans are still listed as missing from the war, . About 5,300 of those are believed to have died on battlefields or in prison camps in North Korea, the site added.Thomas Redgate enlisted in the Army as a 17 year old near the end of World War II.
