PLANNED PARENTHOOD OF THE HEARTLAND CLAIMS THE BILL IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL, SAYING IT WAS PASSED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, AND THAT IT ACTUALLY VIOLATES DUE PROCESS AND EQUAL PROTECTION RIGHTS. MEANWHILE, A JUDGE IN IOWA CITY IS DELIBERATING A TEMPORAR INJUNCTION TO BLOCK THAT LAW. OUR SISTER STATION IN CEDAR RAPIDS REPORTS A HEARING WAS HELD MONDAY. THE JUDGE SAID A RULING WOULD LIKELY COME TODAY BECAUSE THE LAW IS SET TO TAKE EFFECT TOMORROW. GOVERNOR REYNOLDS ALSO SIGNED A BILL INTO LAW THAT WILL CREATE HARSHER PUNISHMENTS FOR ANIMAL-CRUELTY OFFENDERS. IOWA LAWMAKERS HAVE BEEN WORKING ON THE MEASURE FOR YEARS. IT CLARIFIES THE CURRENT CODE TO ANIMALS OTHER THAN LIVESTOCK. THE LAW INCREASES PENALTIES FOR ANIMAL ABUSE AND NEGLECT. CHANGES TO IOWA’S MEDICAL MARIJUANA PROGRAM WERE SIGNED INTO LAW. PATIENTS WITH POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER AND SEVERE AUTISM CAN NOW USE THE PROGRAM THE LEGISLATION SETS THE THC LIMIT TO 4.5 GRAMS PER 90 DAYS, AS WELL.
