NEW!136sharesCLEVELAND, Ohio — With the NFL advising teams last week that training camp is still set to open as scheduled on July 28, NFLPA president and Browns center JC Tretter waved the caution flag once again., Tretter warned that the fight for safety amid Covid-19 has only just begun and that football won’t happen until the membership feels safe.“Professional athletes in every sport have to regularly fend off criticism that our profession should be considered less of a job and that we shouldn’t fight for protections and benefits,‘' he wrote. “As we begin our fight for necessary COVID-19 protections, these recycled misconceptions will be used to undermine the strength of our union and the legitimacy of your career.‘'to talk to their players about the risks of Covid-19 before they decide whether or not to take the field. It advises players to heed the advice of the CDC, which identifies about 20 preexisting conditions that could increase the risk for a severe case of the virus. The memo comes in the wake of at least one player from the 49ers testing positive after a player-organized group workout with some teammates. Players from other leagues have tested positive after practicing together.“We’re not invincible, and as recent reports have shown, we certainly aren’t immune to this virus,‘' Tretter wrote. “Underlying conditions like high BMI [body mass index], asthma and sleep apnea are all associated with a higher risk of developing severe symptoms and complications when infected with COVID-19. Those conditions are widespread across the league. NFL players are humans -- some with immuno-compromised family members or live-in elderly parents. Trust me: we want to play football. But as a union, our most important job is keep our players safe and alive. The NFLPA will fight for our most at-risk players and their families.‘'Tretter warned that there are many hurdles to cross before the season gets underway. The Pro Football Hall of Fame Game set for Aug. 6 has already been canceled, and the NFL has discussed shortening the preseason from four games to two. The Browns are scheduled to open the preseason Aug. 15 in Chicago and the regular season Sept. 13 in Baltimore.“It’s the responsibility of the employer to provide a safe work environment,‘' Tretter wrote. “I encourage all workers to hold their employers accountable to high standards. More so than any other sport, the game of football is the perfect storm for virus transmission. There are protections, both short and long term, that must be agreed upon before we can safely return to work.
