Louisville Courier JournalView CommentsMOREHEAD, Ky. — Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell stressed during an appearance in his home state Friday that people should wear a face mask in public to protect themselves and others until there's a vaccine for COVID-19."This is not as complicated as a ventilator, and this is a way to indicate that you want to protect others," he said&nbsp;during&nbsp;a press conference that afternoon, holding up the mask he wore to the event and only took off when he stepped up to a microphone to speak.&nbsp;McConnell was visiting St. Claire HealthCare in Morehead to talk about how the CARES Act, a massive coronavirus relief bill he shepherded through the Senate, has&nbsp;provided nearly&nbsp;$17.4 million to this rural&nbsp;health care system during the pandemic.He thanked St. Claire's health professionals for the work they've done to provide vital services to patients amid an unprecedented crisis.And he also took a brief moment to emphasize the importance, from a public health standpoint, of wearing a mask when you're out and about.&nbsp;Primaries:"I see various events on television in which people are clearly not wearing masks, not taking it seriously and not doing others a favor," he continued. "We need to get past that in order to protect not only ourselves but our friends and colleagues and others until we get to a vaccine."His stance differs sharply&nbsp;from President Donald Trump's approach to&nbsp;the mask issue.Trump has repeatedly been seen and photographed in public without a mask, and he masks a "double-edged sword" even though the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention&nbsp;recommends Americans wear them to help prevent the spread of this&nbsp;dangerous virus.&nbsp;Vice President Mike Pence also has not worn a mask during some public events, although he has been seen donning one in the past.&nbsp;And at a press conference Friday, during&nbsp;which he&nbsp;did not wear a mask, he listed things people should do to protect against COVID-19 — but notably did not mention mask-wearing&nbsp;as one of them.&nbsp;More:At Friday's appearance in Morehead,&nbsp;McConnell noted that he and other senators have been putting on masks and staying 6 feet apart while they work together in Washington, D.C., and he indicated&nbsp;they're trying to be a good example.He also pointed out that Kentucky and other states&nbsp;are&nbsp;still in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.
