Two more bargaining sessions are planned between now and July 4.Sticking points include levels of nurse staffing, benefits and pay, said Pat Meade, a longtime nurse at the hospital and a member of the Saint Joseph Nurses Association, which is part of the Illinois Nurses Association.Advertisement“We feel confident in the fact that we’ve done everything we can do,” Meade said. “We’ve put forth every effort. We have to stay steadfast.”A spokesman for Amita Health did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday morning.If the nurses go on strike, the action would come as hospitals continue to deal with the financial fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hospitals across the state and nation have suffered revenue losses because of canceled elective surgeries and fewer non-COVID-19 patients.Nurses at a number of hospitals across the country have gone on strike in recent years, often citing staffing levels as a chief concern.Last year, more than 2,200 nurses at the University of Chicago Medical Center went on strike, seeking lower nurse-to-patient ratios. That strike lasted one day but was followed by a four-day lockout. Those nurses were part of the National Nurses Organizing Committee/National Nurses United.The hospital maintained that its staffing levels were not a problem. During that strike and lockout, the hospital moved babies and children in intensive care units to other hospitals, canceled and rescheduled elective surgeries, and asked ambulances to take patients elsewhere.
