Wearing a mask seems so simple, but it can save lives.”Metro Health statistics for the month of June depict a steep climb in infections and hospitalizations.A total of 406 COVID-positive patients were in area hospitals Sunday evening, the public health agency reported. That was 70 more than on Saturday and more than four times as many as on June 1, when hospitals were treating just 93 coronavirus patients.Of those currently hospitalized, 133 were in intensive care Sunday, up from 111 the day before and just 39 at the beginning of the month.Sixty-four patients were on ventilators, compared with 49 on Saturday. On June 1, there were 20.Officials at UT Health San Antonio said recently that their computer models suggest the number of COVID-19 patients in the region’s hospitals and grow tenfold by August.The worrisome forecasts prompted UT Health to launch a public education campaign called “We Can Stop the Spread.” The initiative urges residents to redouble efforts to wash hands meticulously, wear masks in public, avoid touching one’s face, eyes or nose, and steer clear of crowded places — especially indoor environments.Statistics released Sunday by Metro Health suggested hospitals were not yet under serious stress. Of the region’s 4,707 staffed hospital beds, 28 percent were available for new patients, Metro Health reported.
