Use Next and Previous buttons to navigateLike so many other entertainment creators in pandemic-struck 2020, Elm Shakespeare Company on Monday announced it was canceling its signature event this year — the summer production in New Haven’s Edgerton Park — due to COVID-19.Despite the casual outdoor setting of the production at Edgerton, other factors related to the professional production came into play, according to the Elm Shakespeare release that expressed “great disappointment.”“In following state and local guidelines and in close consultation with New Haven leadership and Southern CT State University (Elm Shakespeare’s summer base where sets are built), we have reached the difficult conclusion that we cannot rehearse, build and perform a production while ensuring the health and safety of our artists and audience,” the release said.It went on to say that “while Shakespeare in Edgerton Park has been a beloved New Haven tradition for 25 years, no play is worth the possibility of even one person getting sick. And so, for this year, we will not gather in the park.”The company, led by Producing Artistic Director Rebecca Goodheart, stressed that its work is continuing this summer with online learning and experiences.“Our teaching artist team has completely re-imagined the camp experience, redesigning our summer programs for kids (and teens) to participate from home in ways that go beyond traditional online-learning Zoom instruction… with tech savvy teachers, plenty of ‘away-from-screen’ activities, arts &amp; crafts projects with home delivery of supplies and live ‘Zoom’ performances,” the release said.The troupe is making it free to any child who family members are essential workers or unemployed, the release stated.More NewsElm Shakespeare promised more information soon on alternative live performance models “enabling our professional production to travel and perform for smaller audiences throughout the community “once it is safe to do so.”Long Wharf Theatre recently announced it was canceling nearly its entire 2020-21 season and would perform smaller shows at community locations instead of at the Long Wharf stages.The Elm Shakespeare announcement referred to the “temporary stumbling block of COVID-19. Once it is past, we will come back to the park, and once again laugh, cry, break bread and heal together through the generous alchemy of Shakespeare in the park.”
