Also, coaches and the students in those two small groups who came into close contact with the positive individuals must remain at home for 14 days, check temperature daily and if they show symptoms, get tested.Kristi Lee, Executive Director of Communications and Community Relations, Bastrop Independent School DistrictThe University Interscholastic League (UIL) sent guidance allowing schools to host summer workouts beginning last Monday. The Bastrop High School and Cedar Creek High School launched a Monday-Thursday program on that date and learned about the positive results last Friday and Saturday.The district reports 330 student athletes participated in these workouts.The district says there were safety protocols in place to protect the student athletes and their coaches. There were daily temperature checks, athletes maintained social distance, weights were disinfected and locker rooms were closed off, among other things.The Bastrop Health Authority confirmed to KXAN that the district had been maintaining these protocols and that an investigation is underway to determine, as closely as possible, when these students contracted the virus.Some parents said they were not bothered by the news that athletes has tested positive. They said they knew it was an inherent risk when sending the kids off to the workout, but maintained its up to each family to make the decision that’s best for them.“You know it’s out there. You’re sending your kids to strength and conditioning with hundreds of kids. You know it’s a risk,” said Denise Miles, a mother to two student athletes at Bastrop High.The camp at Cedar Creek High School is still ongoing, the district reports. Summer workouts will resume at Bastrop High on June 29.The San Marcos Consolidated Indepedent School District has also had to suspend its summer strength and conditioning workouts after one student, in attendance at a June 8 workout, tested positive for COVID-19.The district said that the goal is to reopen for summer workouts beginning July 6.“School districts are doing what they can to prepare for an unknown and uncharted territory,” said Andrew Fernandez, the executive director of communications for the SMCISD. “We promise that when it is safe to return, we are going to go through the workouts and we are going to prepare for the fall sports and for another school year.”Thanks for signing up!Watch for us in your inbox.Subscribe NowThanks for signing up!Watch for us in your inbox.Subscribe Now✕× Close Ad
