LET ME WALK YOU THROUGH WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENED INSIDE OF CITY HALL TODAY AND WHAT THIS DECISION DOES IN FACT MEAN. A COMMITTEE WILL FORM AND MAKE SUGGESTIONS ON CHANGES THEY WANT TO SEE. THIS IS FOR STREETS, PARKS, AND PUBLIC PLACES IN THE CITY THAT ARE LINKED TO THE CONFEDERATE ERA. THE COUNCIL SAID THE STUDY WILL TAKE A FEW MONTHS. WE TALKED TO LOCALS ABOUT THE DECISION. &gt;&gt; I'D LIKE TO SEE THE RENAMING OF JEFFERSON PARKWAY TO NORMAN C. FRANCIS PARKWAY I BELIEVE LEE CIRCLE COULD BE RENAMED TO LEAH CHASE CIRCLE. The committee will get feedback from neighborhood and will also look into what will replace monuments that were taken down. The council said it will work with the public to make changes as convenient as possible and waive costs as much as possible for people needing to change their addresses.Moreno said she plans to introduce a motion at end of meeting to rename Jeff Davis Parkway. Council members Helena Moreno and Council President Jason Williams spearheaded the request over a week ago. Moreno issued the following statement on the name change:"At the conclusion of tomorrow's regular City Council meeting, Council Vice President Helena Moreno will introduce an ordinance co-authored by all seven Council members that would legally rename Jefferson Davis Parkway to Doctor Norman Francis Parkway. The instrument, entered for "first read" tomorrow, will then be ready for passage within the next 60 days when the City Planning Commission (CPC) returns its report on the street name change request sent by Council members Moreno and Williams last week."Removing the vestiges of Jim Crow from our public spaces is essential work. It does not solve our problems, but it is a small part of healing our society's wounds. This change, driven by a community-led petition, supported by five current or former New Orleans Mayors, Congressmen, State Senators and even national figures like Stevie Wonder, is just the beginning of the work to defeat white supremacy and systematic racism," said Council member Moreno."Last week, Council members Moreno and Williams sent a letter to the CPC formally requesting a study on the name change, the first step in the process.
