Buenos Aires said it is working to "recover" the Falkland Islands "peacefully" despite Britain claiming the archipelago 87 years ago - and winning a war over the territory in 1982. Argentine Governor Gustavo Melella warned the UK it "is our land" after it emerged the South American country has suspended the exchange of fisheries information with Britain regarding waters near the Falklands – known in Spanish as Islas Malvinas. Mr Melella said: “We are working to recover Malvinas peacefully."We work towards the peaceful recovery of the Malvinas Islands."He also thanked God for having a president who has the cause of the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands "engraved in his heart and in his actions". He said: "It makes me feel very calm and very happy that today, more than ever, we are working for that peaceful recovery of our beloved island."For us it is a pride, but above all a great challenge".It comes after Argentine Foreign Minister Felipe Solá revealed on Friday that Argentina had suspended the exchange of fisheries information with the UK regarding waters near Malvinas.READ MORE:&nbsp; He said the agreement was in favour of the UK, rather than Argentina, saying it "benefits the usurpers".Mr Solá said: “We have already suspended all scientific exchange because it is a sovereignty issue. We cannot deliver strategic data to an usurper."In 2016, that agreement was made... by which we had to deliver information to England on the evolution of the biomass of fisheries."DON'T MISS [REVEALED] Mr Solá said negotiations over the future of the islands during Brexit talks would "remove England" from its "comfort zone".He has asked the EU and the governments of France and Spain "that Malvinas is not included in the negotiations that take place between the EU and the United Kingdom."He added: “It’s important that Malvinas is not considered part of the negotiations, but remains an internationally disputed area... because if the UK negotiates a tariff or anything from a commercial point of view with the EU, Malvinas cannot be included." The two historic foes have been embroiled in a long-running diplomatic spat over the islands, which have been under British control since 1833.Argentina's 1982 invasion sparked a war which left around 650 Argentine soldiers and 255 British dead.It ended with the surrender of the Argentine troops a few weeks later.Argentine forces invaded the Falklands – known in Spanish as Islas Malvinas – and so Margaret Thatcher led the British military to defend the British Overseas Territory.Britain won, but tensions have remained over the Island’s sovereignty ever since.
