&nbsp;The number of Ohioans skipping a meal or uncertain if they’ll have enough food for their family has nearly doubled since the coronavirus outbreak hit the state.Food insecurity rates have reached 23%, in Ohio, up from about 14% a few months ago, according to the Census Household Pulse Survey.Meanwhile, more than 350,000 Ohio families received free food from a pantry, school meal program or elsewhere like a neighbor in the past week, according to the survey. The new figure comes as the coronavirus cripples the state economy, driving up unemployment and making it difficult for many to pay the rent or buy groceries."COVID-19 has created the perfect storm, releasing a downpour of difficulties on Ohio families," said Lisa Hamler-Fugitt, executive director of the Ohio Association of Foodbanks."High unemployment rates and loss of income from jobs has led to a massive surge in demand at our food banks at a time when we’re facing significant operational challenges, including declines in volunteers, fundraising revenue and donated food."There also has been a surge in families seeking SNAP benefits, or food stamps.Gov. Mike DeWine shut down schools and much of Ohio’s economy in mid-March. In April, SNAP applications soared to nearly 105,000, up from 43,000 in February. Applications declined in May to about 46,000.In response to the pandemic, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services has eased SNAP regulations and expanded benefits. For instance, SNAP beneficiaries can now use their cards to purchase groceries online and supplemental benefits have been provided to families whose children normally receive free or reduced-price meals at school.Hamler-Fugitt and other advocates say more must be done and are urging Congress to increase SNAP benefits for all families and also expand those for children in the school meal program.ccandisky@dispatch.com@ccandiskyChoose the plan that’s right for you.
