CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Health officials have announced 770 new cases of COVID-19 and 5 more deaths in South Carolina. The number of new cases is the highest daily case increase since the pandemic began.Friday’s new cases surpassed the previous record which was on .Officials with the Department of Health and Environmental Control have voiced their concerns regarding the increasing number of cases in the past several days and have urged the public to practice social distancing and wear masks.“I am more concerned about COVID-19 in South Carolina than I have ever been before,” said Dr. Linda Bell with DHEC . “Your community might not be a hotspot today, but there should be no mistake that COVID-19 transmission is still high.”Today’s update brings the total number of people confirmed to have COVID-19 in the state to 17,170, and those who have died to 593, according to the Department of Health and Environmental Control.All five deaths reported on Friday occurred in elderly individuals from Aiken, Charleston, Lexington, Orangeburg, and Richland counties.DHEC officials reported on Friday that 78% of patients have recovered from the virus while 22% of patients remain ill. As of Thursday, a total of 272,128 tests, have been conducted in the state.“The total number of individuals tested yesterday statewide was 5,357 (not including antibody tests) and the percent positive was 14.4%,” DHEC officials said in a statement.The recent spike in cases is not just because of more testing, DHEC officials said. While case numbers have increased, so has the percent positive.
