Backers need to gather just under 1.5 million valid signatures by Nov. 7 to force an election asking voters whether Newsom should be ousted from office.The two earlier recall efforts but Heatlie and other recall backers are convinced it will be different this time.Newsom “is a failed governor” who mismanaged the pandemic and threatened the state’s economy by shutting down businesses, Tom Del Beccaro, former chairman of the California Republican Party, told 500 people at a telephone town hall on the recall effort last week. “We don’t truly have a (health) crisis.”While backers say the recall is a mass movement, “not about political party or ideology,” the effort has strong ties to the California Republican Party, which backed the previous recall efforts.In addition to Del Beccaro, a 2016 candidate for U.S. Senate, speakers at the town hall included Steve Frank, a GOP activist who ran unsuccessfully for party chair last year, and Mark Meuser, an attorney who lost as the Republican candidate for secretary of state in 2018.Besides Newsom’s handling of the pandemic, the recall backers have a long list of other complaints about the governor.“Are you tired of being locked up, unable to make a living, at the same time as California’s prisons are being emptied?” the campaign backers ask on their website. “Did you struggle to run a business, even before this lockdown, because of overregulation and the highest taxes in America? ... Are you troubled by encroachments on your 2nd Amendment rights, threatening your ability to purchase a firearm to protect yourself, especially now?”Frank said at the town hall that the recall campaign aims to collect 100,000 signatures in its first 10 days, using talk radio, social media and a statewide network of conservative activists to spread the word.That’s a tough order, especially since the campaign is an all-volunteer effort, with no money to hire the professional signature gatherers that almost all successful ballot campaigns use.About Our Newsroom“It’s a monumental task,” said Heatlie, who heads the recall effort.The recall’s biggest problem, however, is that California voters are pleased with job Newsom is doing, both in fighting the coronavirus and in handling the state’s economy.
