So as a show of neighborhood solidarity, more than a week after the neighborhood sustained damage from looters, Phalanx joined several dozen Roseland community members, including the Calumet District police commander, to march through the neighborhood.Advertisement“Change is coming,” Phalanx said.Several businesses along Michigan Avenue and 111th Street, main thoroughfares in the neighborhood, were damaged by looting that followed widespread protests in Chicago after the May killing of George Floyd, but Roseland residents say the area had already been the subject of neglect and disinvestment by the city.AdvertisementIn response, the group gathered Wednesday morning at 110th Street and marched several blocks down Michigan to 115th Street, demanding change and investment for the neighborhood.“We want the revitalization of our community,” Phalanx said.The group chanted “We March, We Matter” and “Roseland, Rise up” as it headed down Michigan, prompting shows of support from neighbors who walked by on the sidewalk.Calumet District Cmdr. Glenn White stood near the front of the group, marching with the residents who live in his district. “We can’t solve this problem by ourselves,” he said.White was out in his district when the looting was happening last week, and took a walk through the neighborhood the day after. He spoke with residents, including an 81-year-old pharmacy owner who was trying to figure out if he would be able to rebuild his business.“What I saw was devastation,” White said.At the end of the march, the group gathered at 115th Street, shouting, “Roseland. Roseland.” Joyce Chapman, a community organizer, said she is creating a “plan of action” for the neighborhood and asked residents to send her ideas and questions.
