For Dillon native, Jerome McQueen, his love of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) started at a young age. However, as he was studying engineering at South Carolina State University, he noticed something interesting."When I got the regional meetings, I noticed that only the undergraduates from South Carolina State were the only people of color studying engineering," said McQueen.It was there that McQueen decided to step up and help open the world of STEM to minorities across the state."When I got out of school, I always had this nagging thing, I have to do something to increase the opportunities for people of color and women getting into engineering," said McQueen.He created the AcaSTEMics organization as a way to give kids the chance to learn STEM concepts and see if it is a possible career for them.TRENDING: SC for Ed urge leaders to mandate masks in schools after 'seeing children on ventilators'McQueen said kids need to realize the multiple doors that can be open through STEM."They do not know how much career opportunities there are in STEM so I am trying to expose those things to them, to get them on board. The trick of it is to start as young as possible," said McQueen.The Dillon native was even recognized by Forbes as one of the six most influential people trying to bridge the gap for people of color entering STEM.In August, McQueen brought a AcaSTEMics camp to kids in Florence through a partnership with the South Carolina State 1890 Research and Extension department.Following its success, he plans to bring AcaSTEMics as a permanent after-school program in Florence and the Pee Dee, so more kids can be exposed to the STEM field.He also hopes to inspire young people from Dillon to not only achieve success but to give back."I want to bring what I've seen throughout the world and bring it back to Dillon and give those kids in Dillon that opportunity to make sure they can reach the full potential in their life.
