West Caudle said when he was confronted, all he could think about was making sure the other protesters were safe.At a protest in Elkin Saturday, many people came together to stand up against injustice and oppression and racism. “People from all walks of life, every race, every political affiliation that joined together in this community green space to show that we have a voice, ” said West Caudle with Yadkin Valley Community Matters.But a few minutes into the march, Elkin Police said a man named Leroy O’Dell Boles used a vehicle to hit a person who was helping others cross the street at the intersection of Main Street and Bridge Street. Caudle said he was the one hit. “In the moment all I could focus on was the safety of the protesters and other individuals in downtown,” said Caudle.Police said Boles got out of his vehicle holding a gun by his side. Photos showed the man getting close to Caudle just moments before Elkin Police arrested the man. Caudle said he and several other people tried to intervene as well. Although Police said Boles is from Alaska, some residents said they believe he lives in the area. “I cannot help but think that someone who would exit a vehicle like that doesn’t have much regard for anyone but themselves, and at that moment all I could think about was the safety of everyone else,” said Caudle. Police arrested Boles for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, among other crimes. Elkin Mayor Sam Bishop said seeing what happened frustrated him and that he wants people to know that one persons actions do not line up with greater Elkin community. “Just to see something like that, its just not a good reflection on what is going on here in Elkin, it’s a shame it happened,” said Mayor Bishop.
