NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Thanks to the New Haven Police Athletic League (PAL) young boys and girls in New Haven are learning how to ice skate with a special assist from the New York Rangers.
New Haven residents, or anyone who attends a New Haven public school, aged 5 to 12 can learn to skate and play hockey with the police athletic league.
Former New York Rangers captain Ron Greschner was at Ralph Walker Rink Tuesday night.
The New York Rangers also outfitted the kids from head to toe.
The partnership between the police athletic league and the rangers goes a long way in building a relationship between the police and kids at a younger age.
“You know when a police officer does have to come, these kids already know their police officers.&nbsp; And they’re gonna respect their police officers, and they’re gonna trust their police officers. And that’s the biggest thing. If we can get our community to trust us more, then we can police our community better,“ New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson said.
The program is completely free and lasts from December 2023 until March 2024.
	
“When I met with the Rangers it was an absolute no-brainer. It’s just something that’s not around here, and the goal is to make the sport more accessible around New Haven,” New Haven Police Sgt. Ron Ferrante said.
